Giants’ Mike Sullivan calls opposing players “not man enough” to take on Odell

Posted by Michael David Smith on October 6, 2016, 3:48 PM EDT

As opposing defensive players increasingly try to get under the skin of Giants receiver Odell Beckham, Giants offensive coordinator Mike Sullivan has had enough.

Sullivan said today that if a player has to try to get into Beckham’s head, that says more about the other players than it says about Beckham.

“The only reason a guy tries to get him off his game is because they’re not confident enough in their abilities,” Sullivan said. “They’re afraid to match-up against him 1-on-1, mano y mano. If that’s going to be the approach, you can put that when you’re ranking and say, ‘Obviously the guy is not courageous enough or brave enough or not man enough to go ahead and play it straight up.’ If they need those types of tricks, then so be it. We’re going to rise above that.”

Sullivan may be trying to get into the heads of opposing defensive players, hoping that they’ll stop baiting Beckham. But the only thing that’s going to stop opposing players from baiting Beckham is for Beckham to show it doesn’t work. As long as Beckham can be talked into getting 15-yard penalties, opposing players are going to keep talking to him. Whether Sullivan likes it or not.

Yeah, because mental toughness isn't a part of the game or anything... Nice try though at trying to get defenders to back off him.

That's a poisonous attitude for a coach to have. Literally enabling.

Yeah, @DraftCowboys was one of them. He always put out good ones and quick, too. Just so damn dumb. I mean, what exactly do they lose by letting someone drop a Vine on Twitter? It's not like they lose money.

One theory is this will help cut down the flack they get from missed calls

So, they are going to try to improve their image by being even less transparent? Sounds legit.

Going by how they "simplified" the catch rule I wouldn't put it past them

Almost every decision the NFL makes is anti-fan these days so I can't say I'm surprised

And then they wanna know why ratings are down.

I can't think of another sports league that actually does things to turn off the fans towards the product.

Lane Johnson's 10-game suspension upheld
Kevin Patra
Around the NFL writer
Oct. 11, 2016 at 10:41 a.m.

Lane Johnson did not win the appeal of his 10-game suspension.

Johnson's attorney released a statement Tuesday stating the suspension was upheld for violating the league's policy on performance-enhancing drugs.

"We are disappointed with Arbitrator James Carter's summary ruling," Steve Zashin wrote in the statement obtained by NFL Network's Mike Garafolo. "We will wait for his formal written opinion. After we review that decision, we will consider all available legal options."

Johnson was previously suspended four games for a PED violation in 2014.

The Eagles released the following statement from executive vice president of football operations Howie Roseman after the news:

"We're very disappointed that Lane Johnson has been suspended 10 games. His actions have affected the entire organization. We are all working under a clearly-defined set of rules and regulations set forth by the NFL in the collective bargaining agreement with the NFLPA. Moving forward, he has no choice but to hold himself accountable to Jeffrey Lurie, Coach Pederson and his staff, his teammates, and to the entire organization and our fans. When he returns from suspension, we will continue to support him and welcome him back to the team. We are moving on with our preparations for this week's game in Washington."The 26-year-old Johnson played in the first four games of this season while appealing the ruling that came down in early August.

Johnson has played fantastic to open the season on a very good Eagles offensive line. Perhaps one of the surprises of the season is how well the blocking has held up in front of Carson Wentz after the group struggled last year under Chip Kelly. Pro Football Focus ranks Johnson its No. 3 overall offensive tackle to start the year.

Missing Johnson until Week 16 is a massive blow for an Eagles squad in playoff positioning. How Johnson's absence affects Wentz, who has been sublime to start his rookie campaign, is something to monitor.

Garafolo reports the team will start rookie Halapoulivaati Vaitai in Johnson's place.

It's nice to see the Eagles don't also get the Steelers treatment when it comes to suspensions.

49ers bench Blaine Gabbert, will start Colin Kaepernick at QB

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- After five weeks of watching quarterback Blaine Gabbert struggle, San Francisco 49ers coach Chip Kelly is making a change.

After weeks of speculation, Kelly on Tuesday named Colin Kaepernick his starting quarterback for Sunday's game against Buffalo.

"Just to announce, we're going to make a move at quarterback and we're going to start Colin this week and give him an opportunity to run with the ones," Kelly said. "I believe you've got to do it at the beginning of the week just because of how reps are distributed."
