With Gene Steratore calling Oakland game, Cowboys fans have bad thoughts
12:00 PM CT
Todd Archer
ESPN Staff Writer

For the first time since the Dez Bryant catch/no-catch in the divisional round of the 2014 playoffs against the Green Bay Packers, the Dallas Cowboys will get to say hello to referee Gene Steratore.

To this day, the Cowboys believe Bryant made the fourth-down catch of a Tony Romo pass down the sideline over Sam Shields. As he was going to the ground, Bryant said he was reaching out for the goal line and the ball popped into the air as he hit the ground, but the play initially was ruled a catch.

Steratore went to replay and with some help from New York, the catch was overturned and the Cowboys’ season effectively ended. Who knows what would have happened had the Cowboys scored? Maybe Aaron Rodgers would have delivered in the final minutes and the Packers would have won anyway. But the Cowboys -- and their fans -- believe they were robbed.

And it seems that since this game, nobody knows what is or is not a catch in the NFL.

Since 2010, the Cowboys are 1-4 in games Steratore calls, although the playoff game was with an all-star crew. In those games, the Cowboys have been penalized 26 times for 201 yards and their opponents have been flagged 30 times for 235 yards.

Last week, Steratore worked the heated game between the Seattle Seahawks and Jacksonville Jaguars that got ugly in the final seconds. The crew called 24 penalties with 13 accepted. The Jaguars had seven penalties for 48 yards, while the Seahawks had six for 73 yards.

This is the second straight game in which the Cowboys will have a ref coming off a game that got out of hand the previous week. Walt Anderson worked the Pittsburgh Steelers-Cincinnati Bengals affair before calling the Cowboys’ win against the New York Giants.

The breakdown:

Offensive holding -- 3

Defensive pass interference -- 1

Taunting -- 1

Illegal blindside block -- 1

Illegal block above the waist -- 3

Defensive holding -- 1

Ineligible man downfield -- 1

Illegal use of hands -- 2

Intentional grounding -- 1

Unnecessary roughness -- 3

Face mask -- 1

False start -- 2

Illegal formation -- 1

Disqualification -- 2

Unsportsmanlike conduct -- 1

Quarter-by-quarter:

First -- 6

Second -- 5

Third -- 6

Fourth -- 7

I know these guys have to fill web space, but I think it's pretty pathetic that Archer does a ref profile each week.

Yeah, it's kinda dumb. But, it allowed me to kick off our Stuff thread, so it'll do.

[h=1]5 things to know about the Raiders, including Marshawn Lynch's NFL return and Derek Carr's struggles[/h]By SportsDayDFW.com Contact SportsDayDFW.comon Twitter:@SportsDayDFW

The Cowboys travel to play the Oakland Raiders on Sunday Night Football. It's another must-win for Dallas if they hope to make the playoffs. Here are five things Cowboys fans should know about the Raiders.

1. Disappointing season

If you thought the Cowboys were having an underwhelming year, just take a look at the Raiders. Oakland went 12-4 last season and was a popular pick to win the AFC and reach the Super Bowl this season. Instead, the Raiders are 6-7 heading into their showdown with the Cowboys. Oakland isn't out of the AFC playoff picture yet, though. The Chiefs and Chargers are ahead of the Raiders in AFC West, but both sit at 7-6. This is a major game for both teams in terms of playoff implications.

2. Vegas bound

The Raiders won't be in Oakland for much longer. The NFL owners voted 31-1 to move the Raiders to Las Vegas. The Raiders will likely begin in Vegas in 2019 and already have plans for a $2 billion stadium. Here's how the move could affect Cowboys owner Jerry Jones.

3. Beast Mode back

Marshawn Lynch (AKA: Beast Mode) decided to retire in February 2016 after a 10-year career with Buffalo and Seattle. After news of the Raiders' impending move to Vegas broke, Lynch came out of retirement to join his hometown team before calling it quits for good. The 31-year-old Lynch leads the Raiders in rushing with 619 yards and seven touchdowns on 147 carries. Lynch has also been at the center of the NFL's national anthem controversy for sitting during the Star Spangled Banner. Donald Trump even tweeted directly at Lynch, saying the NFL should suspend him.
Still, it looks Lynch is having a great time playing for his hometown Oakland Raiders.

4. A young franchise quarterback

It appears the Cowboys have their quarterback of the future in Dak Prescott, but Oakland has another excellent young signal-caller in Derek Carr. The 26-year-old threw for 3,937 yards, 28 touchdowns and just six interceptions last season. He turned that into a five-year, $125 million contract extension in the offseason which made him the NFL's highest paid player.

But Carr has regressed this season. He's thrown for 2,942 yards, 18 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He was also dealing with a transverse process fracture in is back earlier this season. Carr and Prescott have been compared a few times lately considering both are young quarterbacks leading iconic franchises. Here's what people are saying about the two.

5. Defensive struggles...again

Oakland has struggled again on defense this season. The Raiders' are No. 23 in the league in total defense, allowing 350.8 yards per game. That's a little better than last year when Oakland was No. 26 in the NFL. It does bode well for a Cowboys offense that has underachieved since running back Ezekiel Elliott began has six-game suspension. Oakland is No. 25 in the NFL in passing defense, which might help Prescott and the Cowboys' receivers finally put together a complete game.

Oakland's struggles on defense are mildly surprising, considering the Raiders have a star in defensive end Khalil Mack. Oakland even signed linebacker Navarro Bowman for help. The Cowboys were also interested in Bowman's services.

The AFC West as a division has the best group of pass-rushers in the league, you could argue that Miller, Mack, and Bosa are all top 5 edge rushers. Throw in Ingram, Houston and Dee Ford when he's healthy and the amount of elite pass-rushers in that division is just absurd.

Collins is not only improving at RT but he should have it much easier moving forward as far as the level of competition he's facing.

Amari Cooper not expected to play on Sunday versus the Cowboys
Dallas might catch a break when they take on the Raiders.
By Dave Halprin Dec 14, 2017, 4:15pm CST

When the Dallas Cowboys take on the Oakland Raiders on Sunday night, they may not have to face one of Oakland’s best players from the last couple of years. Wide receiver Amari Cooper has been dealing with an ankle injury and it doesn’t look like he will be able to go this week.
Raiders WR Amari Cooper not practicing for second straight day. Not expected to play Sunday vs. Cowboys after aggravating left ankle sprain vs. Chiefs.

Without Cooper, Michael Crabtree is the lead dog, and the Raiders could turn to Cordarrelle Patterson to replace Cooper. It hasn’t been a great 2017 for Cooper whose statistics were already down from his first couple of years in the league.

In fact, the whole Raiders passing game is not playing at the level it did last year when they made the playoffs and raised expectations for the team in 2017. The lack of the deep ball has hindered their offense and they want to throw more of them this week, but they won’t be to Cooper.

The Raiders, much like the Cowboys, are hanging on to their playoff hopes by a mere thread. A loss on Sunday would likely crush their 2017 season for good.

______________________________

This is pretty big if he's not going to play.

"I was making sure everyone knew Crabtree was a mediocre receiver. And when you try the best corner in the game with a mediocre receiver, that's what happens. I appreciate that he knows that now." — Richard Sherman

Why in the fuck is it taking 2+ weeks for Irving to come back from a concussion?

You see other guys come back in a few days or a week at most, this guy sustained the concussion, and didn't even leave the game as far as I can tell, against the Redskins more than 2 weeks ago.
