10 days later, still no talks between Bosa and Chargers

The Chargers and defensive end Joey Bosa traded proposals on Thursday, July 28. Since then, the team has opened training camp and practiced for a week. Since then, the Chargers and the third overall pick in the 2016 draft have engaged in no further talks.

By far, it’s the longest rookie holdout since the 2011 labor deal dramatically simplified the process. For the Chargers and Bosa, however, the simplicity is part of the problem.

With only a small handful of issues on which team and player can haggle, the Chargers and Bosa are at odds on all of them. They have no way to find a middle ground because there are no other issues on which they can compromise.

As it stands, the Chargers want offset language attached to Bosa’s fully-guaranteed deal, and they want to defer a large chunk of his signing bonus into March 2017. Bosa wants either no offset language or full payment of the bonus in 2016.

With their positions defined, there’s really nothing to talk about, no gray area into which the two sides can slide in order to find a solution that allows each to feel like it won.

With the deadline for trading Bosa coming in only two days and no indication that the Chargers are considering that option, the question soon will be whether the Chargers and Bosa will get something done before the start of the regular season. If not, they’ll have until the Tuesday after Week 10 before Bosa can’t play at all in 2016.

Surely, it’ll never get to that point. Then again, who would have ever imagined it would get to this point?

Reggie Ragland tore up his knee in training camp. Can't help but feel bad for any rookie coming in who gets a serious injury like that

Bills have to be hating it. Both of their top two draft picks might not even play a down this year.

The amazing thing is the demands he and his agent have are just asinine. Like he is some all world talent that only comes along once in a lifetime.

I don't blame him.

Bosa’s contract negotiations have stalled completely at this point. Bosa’s representation wanted one of two things: a contract with no “offset language” (more on that below) or a full-cash payout in the form of a roughly $17 million signing bonus for 2016. No dice, the Chargers said.

It’s the franchise’s long-held standard of practice not to do either thing, and they were said to have made this known right from the start. And yet other picks in Bosa’s range — this year and historically — have received similar benefits. So you can see why each side is dug in here.

So, it's standard SD policy, yet we've never seen an issue before with them signing their draft picks. Hmm...

Is today the deadline for Bosa to sign before he's added back into the Draft pool for next season? Can they trade away his rights?

They can trade away his rights but why do you think today is the deadline? It used to be rookies may go as far as sitting out some regular season games before signing. Did the rules changed on that during the last CBA?

How will this play out?

There are a few different ways this situation could turn out for Bosa and the Chargers.

Bosa could come to an agreement with San Diego and sign with the team. Despite how long it’s taken them, the two sides still have plenty of time to work something out. Bosa can sign any time between now and the Tuesday after Week 10, which is Nov. 15. After that date, Bosa cannot play at all in the 2016 season.

If Bosa fails to sign with the Chargers before Nov. 15, the team retains the rights to him through the end of the 2016 league year even though he wouldn’t be able to play. After the league year, the team’s rights to Bosa expire, and he could enter the 2017 draft. This, however, is an extremely unlikely outcome.

The Chargers could also choose to trade him, but time is ticking on that scenario. The deadline for that is Tuesday, Aug. 9. The Chargers have not expressed any desire to shop Bosa to other teams.

The most likely outcome is that Bosa will sign with the Chargers, although that doesn’t seem to be imminent. The longer this drags on, the worse it looks for everyone involved. And right now, a rookie who could contribute immediately is missing valuable time to adapt to the NFL and prepare for the season.

There is a cut off date as to when they can trade away his draft rights and it is on the 9th.

The contract S.D. offered would have had Bosa receiving less up front money than 4 guys who were picked after him.

So yeah.
The signing bonus would be the same and would be fully guaranteed. You're right that he wouldn't get it in one lump sum as the Chargers are wanting to spread out the payout of it over a few years. But, it would still be guaranteed to him.

Yeah that makes a lot more sense. I'm sure something will get done. Seems like a pretty minor issue the two parties are fighting over.
