Hall of Fame Game canceled due to field conditions

Posted by Zac Jackson on August 7, 2016, 7:03 PM EDT

Players who were supposed to play in Sunday night’s Hall of Fame Game are tweeting and texting that the game is off.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the game is off due to poor field conditions at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton, Ohio.

As of this posting, there had been no official announcement from the NFL.

The Hall of Fame Game is generally the first preseason game and is a part of Hall of Fame Weekend in Canton, but with renovations in and around the Hall of Fame the new field was apparently deemed unplayable.

The Colts and Packers were scheduled to kick off at 8 p.m. ET.

The coaches involved won’t be too upset, but it’s still a debacle for the NFL. The field at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium is new, and someone should have known there were safety risks in trying to play an NFL game — even a fake one — under such conditions.

Wow.

This is embarrassing.

I think Goodell is like Jerry Jones.

Bad publicity is good publicity.

Especially embarrassing considering they've had at least 8 months to get the stadium ready for play.

IIRC, I think aside from the HoF game, the stadium's only used for High School games.

Yeah, it is bush league. With a league that is making a shit ton of money.

There will be lawsuits out of this. Just offering a game ticket refund isn't going to cut it.

They actually have people still sitting in the stands expecting a game.

I said the same thing. They need to refund hotel and airfare tickets as well. They don't have to but it would be the right thing to do because airfare and hotel fees cost a hell of a lot more than a preseason game ticket.

Also, this isn't like a game being cancelled due to weather. This borders on negligence on the league's part, IMO.

I think they said there were going to bring the Hall of Famers out for a short ceremony or something. That's probably why they're hanging around.

On another note....it is kind of funny that this happened to Favre and the cheeseheads.

Listen to Berman, deep down, these fans get it.

No, you fat fuck, they paid for a game. They paid for the full experience.

It is dumb to play this game outdoors in the Midwest during this time of year. We get a shit ton of thunder storms with lightning. Not to mention the humidity...which could cause some heat related health problems.

The only ones who really care are those fringe players who are fighting for back end of the roster and practice squad positions.

I bet that third string dude from GB slated to start at QB is hating it.
