Multiple people have been injured after a vehicle ran into a crowd Thursday in Spain in what authorities are saying is most likely a terrorist attack.
The "massive" van crash into a crowd along busy Las Ramblas street in Barcelona has left "several wounded," according to a translated tweet from Spanish authorities.
Spanish news outlet RTVE reports the van's driver abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene on foot. Two armed men have also entered a Turkish restaurant in the city after the crash, according to local reports.
The incident occurred in Plaza Catalunya. Photos show police and emergency personnel attending to victims. Police are also asking people in the area of the plaza to stay in place until they are given the OK to leave.
A witness told a Spanish broadcaster that "the person was speeding up. He went up to the curb to trample on the people."
Las Ramblas, a street of stalls and shops that cuts through the center of Barcelona, is one of the city’s top tourist destinations. People walk down a wide, pedestrianized path in the center of the street, but cars can travel on either side.
