Dallas Cowboys attend Los Angeles Lakers workout to scout a Kentucky basketball guard
By Brandon George , Staff Writer

Dallas Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones is fond of saying that player acquisition is 365 days a year in the NFL.

In an effort to leave no stone unturned, a Cowboys representative was in California on Monday to attend a Los Angeles Lakers workout for Kentucky guard Dominique Hawkins, according to a story in the Louisville (Ky.) Courier-Journal.

Hawkins (6-0, 192) averaged 4.7 points as a senior at Kentucky last season but was a star basketball and football player at Madison Central High School in Richmond, Ky., before he played for coach John Calipari.

Hawkins' 44.5-inch vertical would be a great asset as a defensive back, the position he played in high school.

Hawkins was one of six players the Lakers worked out Monday. Multiple NFL teams have inquired about the Kentucky guard, according to the report, but Hawkins isn't interested in pursuing football yet.
The Cowboys will be ready if Hawkins decides to pursue the NFL, however, after doing their homework on the front end.

The Cowboys pursued another college basketball player a year ago when they used a sixth-round pick to select Baylor forward Rico Gathers. And Gathers didn't even play high school football. He last played football as an eighth-grader. The Cowboys have converted Gathers to a tight end, although he didn't play his rookie season while remaining on the club's practice squad.

Recruiting baseball players didn't work so we've moved on to basketball...

At least these pet project type of acquisitions are things we do on the periphery of the roster and are basically just rolls of the dice. We don't actually count on them to be legitimate building blocks or contributors as Jerry did 15-20 years ago.

I'm glad we are out scouting guys just like a bunch of other NFL teams are doing.

Jesus, hopefully with OTA's starting we will start seeing articles with interesting information. This is nothing but a bunch of WGAS every day in the scouting world stuff.

I don't see any problem with this. If the guy comes in and makes it to the practice squad, great. It's not like we're counting on him making the 53 and playing. Maybe his background and athleticism translate into something. If not, oh well. I'm not losing any sleep if somebody like this costs Jameill Showers his PS spot.

Yep.

This is normal shat that only ends up on the radar because there's literally nothing else to discuss.
