20th in the last 26 days.
That's data from 4 years ago, but still....I'm willing to bet the murder rate hasn't changed much.

That sounds more like a damned execution.

This guy's dad got killed by New Orleans police 5 years ago. Apparently, he was swinging a knife at them and they shot him.

Also read that Smith was having dinner with one of the cops that Hayes sued last night.

Regardless of why Cardell Hayes shot and killed former Saints defensive end Will Smith, the fact remains that Hayes apparently did it. The motive may be a little murkier than first believed.

Dubbed an incident of road rage at first, the New Orleans Advocate points out that Hayes sued the City of New Orleans in 2005 after police officers killed his father. Shortly before the automobile accident that resulted in Hayes shooting Smith and his wife, Smith and former Saints teammate Pierre Thomas had eaten dinner with Billy Ceravolo, one of the officers who shot Anthony Hayes and who was personally sued by Cardell Hayes.

Per the Advocate, Ceravolo described Smith and Thomas as personal friends. However, Ceravolo was not at the scene of the shooting. Ceravolo also claimed he wasn’t aware that Cardell Hayes had named Ceravolo in the lawsuit, which was settled in 2011 for what Hayes’ lawyer called a “large” amount of money.

If Cardell Hayes were merely seeking retribution, common sense suggests he would have simply shot Ceravolo. Then again, the mind of a person capable of killing another person isn’t always awash in rational thought. For now, the point is that either the incident of road rage carried with it a strange and bizarre coincidence, or that there really was no coincidence.

Was reading this was like the 30th murder in New Orleans so far this year.
I know they had the prestigious honor of being the murder capital of the world a few years back.

Cardell Hayes was booked on second-degree murder Sunday (April 10) in the shooting death of former Saints defensive end Will Smith, police said.

Smith, 34, was shot to death inside a Mercedes SUV in the Lower Garden District around 11:30 p.m. in an apparent road rage episode, New Orleans police said. The shooter was the driver of a Hummer H2 that careened into the back of Smith's SUV at Sophie Wright Place and Felicity Street, police said.

The two men "exchanged words" before the driver of the Hummer pulled out a gun and began firing, police said. Witnesses reported hearing six to eight shots.

Hayes, 28, was booked into Orleans Parish Prison around 8 a.m. Sunday, records show. Police had taken a suspected shooter into custody at the scene Saturday night. (Read more about Hayes here.)
Smith's wife Racquel was taken away in an ambulance with two shots to her right leg.

Hayes has one previous arrest, on Aug. 1, 2010, court records show. Hayes was charged with illegal carrying of a weapon, illegal possession of codeine and possession of drug paraphernalia, among other charges. He pleaded guilty in June 2012 to a weapons charge and the possession of codeine, and received a 5-year prison sentence that was immediately suspended. But Hayes withdrew his guilty plea the following month, records show.

In June 2013, Hayes rejected a plea offer from prosecutors. Finally, in January 2014 he pleaded guilty to a reduced weapons charge and to a count of possession of drug paraphernalia. He received a suspended six-month sentence, records show.

Appears to be a fine young man who was just upset his Hummer was damaged. Wonder how he got that vehicle? Bet he holds a good job down and everything.
He's proud of that shit.

But yeah, I'm excited for the next announcement of Odumass wanting to ban guns from legal law abiding people because ya know, this guy had felony charges but was somehow still carrying a gun. Amazing how those laws are working.

Well, if this is accurate, it sounds that they may have grounds for first degree murder. It looks like he stalked him, stopped him, and then executed him. With all those connections, there is no way this was just a random encounter resulting in a shooting based on road rage.

farcical argument. the problem is the amount of guns in circulation, making them easily accessible. are you saying youre in favor of allowing murder because it would happen anyway? any gun control would take years if not decades to be felt. this is why you have gun deaths in the US where you wouldnt have them in the UK (for example)

also, the only thing obama has proposed is expanded background checks and controlling assault rifles like the ones used in sandy hook. hes never talked about limiting handguns or other personal defense weapons

And how effective are "expanded background checks" when most criminals are not obtaining their weapons legally to begin with? You're doing nothing but making it more difficult for law abiding citizens to buy guns.

Just the US. San Salvador usually takes the world title. If you count Puerto Rico as part of the US, San Juan beats any U.S. city.

a quick perusal of craigslist shows about a 2k difference in price, if you're willing to get an H2 that's 4-5 years older.
Well, as quickly as cars depreciate, 4-5 years is huge.

Not sure that murderous gangsters are that wrapped up in making the soudest long term financial decisions.
Point still remains that there is a big gap between an H2 and a "normal" car.
