Agreed, but if this is the rule we live by, then we live by it 100% of the time. No more fake outrage when a baker won't bake a cake.

Don’t see how if the students are actually incapable of paying their loans. That would cause a large write off by the lender who in turn would engage the federal guarantee. It leaves a net result of more borrowed money by the fed to cover the guarantees. Another theory however is if the student is sandbagging and the debt is removed then the debtor would likely spend more without the debt service. The lender and the guarantor still would eat it either way.

I would guess it's not that they are "incapable" of paying -- they are probably incapable of paying the sheer volume, though. Freeing up 1000/mo payments would flood the market with maybe not 1000/mo from these borrowers, but may free up 200, 300, 500 a month, etc, that is now gonna be spent elsewhere.

Yeah, the fed is gonna have to fucking eat it, but they should respond by ending these loan guarantees.

The student loan crisis needs some sort of shake up.

    ...and that's the irony.

Texting & driving causes more injuries than gun-related injuries. One is a right, the other isn't. If it's about safety, which one should be regulated?

Take away the guns, but damn you if you take away my cellphone.

Amortized over what, 25 years, he's probably not paying back 175k, more like 350k or more.

Take away neither. If you cause harm you should be liable for it.

People would find a way to get around phone blocks.

That's crazy. He is studying for the bar right now. I'm getting a closer view of how stressful the bar can be. While in law school the poor guy went through hell. His wife conceived a child from a very prominent local figure and divorced him.
