Cowboys interview Mike Nolan, Tim Lewis for spot on staff

IRVING, Texas -- The Dallas Cowboys' search for a defensive backs coach has led them to a familiar family name from their past.

Mike Nolan, whose father, Dick, was a Cowboys’ assistant for 15 years over two different stints, is meeting with coach Jason Garrett today, according to multiple sources. Veteran assistant coach Tim Lewis interviewed with the Cowboys on Monday.

Last week at the Senior Bowl, Garrett interviewed former University of Miami head coach Al Golden but he has since taken a tight ends job with the Detroit Lions. The Cowboys also met with former Tennessee Titans defensive backs coach Steve Brown.

The Cowboys have a vacancy after Jerome Henderson left for the Atlanta Falcons as their passing game defensive coordinator.

Nolan was the San Diego Chargers' linebackers coach in 2015 after a three-year run as the Falcons' defensive coordinator. He was the San Francisco 49ers' head coach from 2005-08 and has been in the NFL since 1987.

Lewis was San Francisco’s defensive backs coach last year after a five-year run with the Falcons. He was a defensive backs coach at SMU from 1989-92. He was the defensive coordinator for the Pittsburgh Steelers (2000-03) and New York Giants (2004-06).

Brown was with the Titans from 2012-15 and was not retained by new coach Mike Mularkey. Brown played cornerback for the Houston Oilers for eight years and had 18 interceptions.

Ben Bloom, who has been on the Cowboys’ defensive staff since 2012, is scheduled to interview for a spot on Hue Jackson’s staff with the Cleveland Browns, according to a source. Bloom coached the Cowboys’ defensive ends in 2014-15 after a two-year run with the linebackers. He joined the Cowboys after coaching under Rob Ryan in Cleveland.

Bloom, who is one of a handful of coaches with an expiring contract, coached safeties at last week’s Senior Bowl after the Cowboys lost Henderson.

At least they are looking at a bunch of former head coaches. Something they should have done early in Garrett's coaching career.

Maybe if he surrounds himself with enough former head coaches, he can figure out how to be one himself.

That is pretty much the plan, it seems.

Nolan is a hothead. Hopefully, he beats the shit out of Garrett 2 weeks into training camp.

Might be a nice fit with our defensive coordinator. Rod Marinelli sort of thrives on guys giving 100 percent at all times. A hot head might be a good addition for this secondary. Maybe our defensive backs would actually play a little aggressive instead of the soft shit we see now.

All I recall about Nolan is him wanting to wear a suit, ala his father, on the sidelines.

This seemed like a good idea at the time.

He was the Ravens DC in the early 90's before taking the HC job for the Niners. He has skins. But he has jumped around a lot.

I was just thinking about the Giants teams he was DC for...thought he had a solid year or 2 of top 10 in points or some shit like that.

I think he would be a damn good hire.

Isn't Nolan a 3-4 guy? I wonder how compatible that will be with our cover 2.

Nolan would be a solid hire, maybe it'd make it more likely that we go after Weddle since he was in San Diego last year.

Excellent. He seems like a hard ass. We need as many of those as possible to offset pussies like Garrett and Romo.

Maybe 'cocky, aloof douchebag who doesn't have it in him to be a serious leader' would be a better description for Romo than pussy.
