George: On 20th anniversary of Cowboys' last Super Bowl, Jerry Jones 'the most surprised person that we haven't been back

MOBILE, Ala. -- Cowboys coach Jason Garrett had just finished a news conference Wednesday at the Senior Bowl when he was asked if he remembers where he was 20 years ago.

Garrett paused.

"The 1995 season? We probably were getting ready to go play in the Super Bowl," Garrett recalled. "A lifetime ago, but at the same time, like a lot of things in our lives, it seems like yesterday."

Not so much for a Cowboys fanbase that has endured two decades of disappointment.

Thursday marks the 20-year anniversary of the last time the Cowboys played in the Super Bowl.

The Cowboys appeared to be building a team to get back to the title game after going 12-4 in 2014 and reaching the NFC divisional playoff. But they took a major step back in 2015 by finishing 4-12.

Owner Jerry Jones was asked Wednesday what gives him confidence the Cowboys can get back to the Super Bowl after a 20-year drought.

"Well, I saw how we got there for the first three that I was involved with," Jones said from Senior Bowl practice. "I'm the most surprised person in Mobile, or the country, that we haven't been back to and competed in a Super Bowl.

"But I know firsthand that you can go from the outhouse to the penthouse, and I've experienced it. Consequently, that fact has always driven me to know that it's just around the corner. There's a pony in here somewhere."

Jones said Wednesday that he remains confident Garrett is the coach and Tony Romo is the quarterback who can lead the Cowboys back to the Super Bowl.

Romo said over the weekend he's also confident he can finally get the Cowboys back to the title game.

"That's all that's left for our football team," Romo said. "For my playing career, that's what you're going to be defined by. We have no choice."

The Cowboys completed one of the most dominant runs in NFL history when they won their third Super Bowl in four years. They defeated Pittsburgh 27-17 to win Super Bowl XXX in Arizona.

Larry Brown -- a former 12th-round draft pick -- became the first cornerback to be named the Super Bowl MVP by intercepting two passes in the second half that the Cowboys turned into touchdowns.

Garrett and Wade Wilson -- the Cowboys' longtime quarterbacks coach -- were the two backup quarterbacks on that team behind Troy Aikman.

Garrett also was part of the Cowboys' Super Bowl run in 1993 and the team that just came up short in 1994.

"I have very vivid memories of those experiences and that's one of the interesting things about life," Garrett said. "It's amazing how time passes as quickly as it does, but the things that are significant in your life you remember like they just happened to you."

The Cowboys have made the playoffs eight times over the last 20 seasons but have never advanced past the NFC divisional round. They're 162-158 the last two decades.

Garrett said Wednesday the Cowboys' resolve following a 4-12 season is the same as it was a year ago after a 12-4 finish.

"I'd like to think our resolve is equal to achieve what we want to achieve, build a program that we're all proud to be a part of and then have success on the field," Garrett said, "and be a winning championship football team. ... There's a lot to learn what happened this past year for us."

Jones believes Garrett will get the Cowboys back on track in 2016.

"I have all the confidence that you need to have in Jason," Jones said. "I really like our staff. We've seen this staff perform and have a good year in 2014. That's why I'm confident that if we get some stability at certainly some key positions on offense that we can have the team that we want to have."

Garrett said he wants to experience that Super Bowl feeling again, but not just for himself.

"For everybody, for everybody," Garrett said. "Those are special experiences to be part of a championship team and everybody is so positively influenced by it. The best teams that I was on had a great feel that everybody was contributing to the success of the team.

"It's a special feeling. I talk to our players about this all the time. Those bonds that you created last for a lifetime. There is always a connection you have to guys who were a part of that. Those are special things to have in your life and you certainly want to cherish them and get back to having those again."

Hey, why haven't we made a Super Bowl in 20 years?

I am the most surprised person in Mobile.

Just around the corner for 15 years or so?

It's been evident in his actions for over two decades. He jumps at short cuts every year somehow thinking he's just a couple of players away.

And after an out of nowhere playoff year like 2003, 2007 and 2014 the thinking grows even more short-term.

As weird as it may sound, this is why the 12-4 year was actually damaging in the long run. It just gave Jerry that much more reason to think that we are just almost there.

This seemed like a good idea at the time.

What history shows with Jones is that a good year just makes him roll the dice and get fucking cute, whether its with players currently on the team, free agents, or the draft.

The guy is just a terrible GM. For every draft or FA signing where he has had success, there are multiple instances of WTF moments that rear their head and cost a critical game or even a season.

No vision. Jerry suffers from his tendency to listen to anyone who he considers a pal. Also he can't get along with a real head coach. The results are predictably schizophrenic.

Thanks to that season, Jason Garrett is now a permanent fixture at 5 years 30 million. Jerry must feel like he's been raped by a ginger elephant.

I doubt it, but if he does it won't last since if we are healthy next year I suspect we'll at least win the division.

If the quality of the division remains the same, for sure. I hope the Eagles and Giants coaching staff turnover helps, but it didn't in 2000 when Andy Reid came up with that pickle juice nonsense.

I mean, anything could happen, but I'm not scared of Doug Pederson.
