FRISCO, Texas -- Chaz Green has not played since Week 4 against the San Francisco 49ers when he suffered a sprained foot while starting in place of Tyron Smith at left tackle.
While his foot has healed well enough, Green has been dealing with a back injury. After going through two limited portions in what can be generously described as light practice this week, Green was unable to work Wednesday and is questionable for Thursday’s game against the Washington Redskins.
The Dallas Cowboys drafted Green in the third round last year with the idea of him becoming the right tackle of the future. He did not play as a rookie because of hip surgery. He opened this season as the swing tackle behind Smith and Doug Free and started two games after Smith was slowed by a bulging disc in his back.
Green came to the Cowboys with injury troubles at Florida. He missed his junior season with a shoulder injury and had other ailments that kept him off the field for different stretches in his career.
“He’s working hard,” coach Jason Garrett said. “He’s a really conscientious guy. He really loves football and he works very hard at it, so that’s not an issue. He just has to get through this thing. Not ready to make these overarching comments about him in that regard [concerning injuries]. We’ve had other guys on our team deal with some injuries at different times in their careers and sometimes people draw conclusions about them. You’ve got to take them as isolated situations and get the foot right, get the back right and let’s get back to work. He’s done a good job. He’s improved as a player. It’ll be good to get him out on the field.”
Emmett Cleary has served as the swing tackle in Green’s absence but has seen offensive snaps only in the blowout win against the Cleveland Browns.
Safety Barry Church will miss his third straight game because of a forearm injury, but he hopes to return to practice next week and play Dec. 1 against the Minnesota Vikings. Cornerback Morris Claiborne (groin) also has been ruled out.
Smith (back, hip), wide receiver Dez Bryant (back), defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence (back) and defensive tackle Terrell McClain (thigh) also are questionable but all are expected to play.
