Texas high school players suspended, may face charges for hitting referee from behind

MARBLE FALLS, Texas -- Two San Antonio high school football players have been suspended and could face criminal charges after one hit a referee from behind and the other subsequently speared him with his helmet during a game Friday night.

The two defensive backs from John Jay High School hit the back judge in the waning moments of a 15-9 loss at Marble Falls, which is located about 90 miles north of San Antonio.

Video shows the referee, who was watching the play from behind the defensive line, getting leveled from behind by a first player, causing the referee's head to snap back. The other player then is seen lowering his helmet and piling into the referee after he had fallen down.

Both players were immediately ejected from the game and later suspended indefinitely from the team and from school, pending an investigation by the Northside Independent School District. The referee was "very upset" and "wanting to press charges," Austin Football Officials Association secretary Wayne Elliott said.

"The first thing we want is that those two kids never play football again," said Elliott, who declined to release the referee's name and added he was seeking guidance from the state officials association.

Northside Independent School District athletic director Stan Laing told KENS5-TV that the incident Friday was "disturbing" and "inexcusable."

District spokesman Pascual Gonzalez told The Associated Press on Sunday that it would hear from game officials, coaches and students during an upcoming due process hearing, which also will involve the University Interscholastic League, the state's school sports governing body.

"It is not the good sportsmanlike behavior that we teach students," Gonzalez said.

Before the referee was hit, two Jay players had been ejected on separate plays.

Marble Falls was trying to run out the clock and called for a handoff toward the left side of the line of scrimmage, according to the San Antonio Express-News. The penalties resulting from the incident gave Marble Falls a first down.

Marble Falls coach Matt Green said John Jay coach Gary Gutierrez apologized after the game.

"I've coached 14 years, and I've never seen anything like it,'' Green said.

They are now claiming the ref used racial epithets against them.

Convenient.

Even if true, unacceptable.
Unacceptable, but I think that given the mitigating factors it's more of a year in Alternative School kind of thing than a "let's take glee in ruining their lives over a situation where no one was seriously injured" thing.

Nah, it is much more reasonable to murder them

They are reporting an assistant coach ordered the hit.
A coach saying, "That ref should pay for those calls" isn't exactly ordering a hit.

Unacceptable, period. If they are the type of people who think it is enough of a good idea that they actually carry through with it, they need a lot of help becoming good people. Unfortunately, prison isn't the place where that happens.

Notice I never said their lives should be ruined.

Texas hearing calls HS coaches' conduct into question over ref incident

ROUND ROCK, Texas -- High school sports officials in Texas are questioning whether the coaches of two players accused of intentionally hitting a referee should have done more to calm emotions in what had been a tense game.

The University Interscholastic League's executive committee heard from local officials during an emergency public hearing Wednesday concerning the incident involving San Antonio's John Jay High School. The organization is investigating several allegations, including that the hit on referee Robert Watts was prompted by something an assistant coach said and was preceded by racial slurs from Watts.

The incident, which happened during a game Friday between John Jay and Marble Falls High School, was caught on video and drew national attention and reactions.

Two Jay High School players -- identified as sophomore Victor Rojas and senior Mike Moreno by the San Antonio Express-News -- and assistant coach Mack Breed have been suspended by the Northside Independent School District pending the investigation.

The UIL said Wednesday that any state disciplinary action against the players or school won't come before its next meeting, Sept. 23. But the UIL has jurisdiction to impose additional sanctions.

A source told ESPN's Pedro Gomez that the students' chances of being reinstated at John Jay High School are "highly unlikely." Other possible options for the students include enrolling at an alternative school -- where only students who have faced disciplinary sanctions attend -- or possible expulsion, in which case they would not be allowed to enroll at any public school in the state of Texas.

The Jay High School players, coaches and Watts did not attend the emergency hearing.

Alan Goldberger, an attorney for Watts, told ESPN on Tuesday that the referee is "outraged" about the allegations that he used racial slurs and that "he's not a happy camper about being falsely accused."

UIL committee members directed local school officials to investigate whether John Jay High School has a culture of unsportsmanlike conduct.

"This has been an embarrassment for the school, the UIL and the state of Texas," said committee member James Colbert of Houston.

Dallas committee member Gil Garza, who used to work in San Antonio schools, noted reported tensions in the game between Jay and Marble Falls high schools, including punches thrown, late hits and ejections before the Jay players rammed Watts.

"The only thing our kids really have is our coaches. That's where the leadership starts," Garza told Northside officials, calling the out-of-control atmosphere "a time bomb waiting to happen. And it did."

Garza also questioned whether the game officials could have done more to control the game.

Officials with the NISD and the Texas Association of Sports Officials said they are still investigating the incident.

The NISD announced it is treating the incident as an assault on a school official.

Video shows Watts, who was watching the play from behind the defensive line, getting leveled from behind by a first player, causing Watts' head to snap back. The other player then is seen lowering his helmet and piling into Watts after he had fallen down.

The case has also has prompted a criminal investigation in Marble Falls, where the police department is conducting an investigation and is scheduled to hold a news conference Thursday.

I did. Theoretically stand by it. Although I know there's no way to build a criminal justice system to enact that kind of revenge. But fuck these guys.
If the ref was paralyzed I'd be more upset, the radio down here in SA is saying he wasn't even injured. Sure, he "could have been" but we punish for results. Whether it's a football tackle or a punch in the face, assault is treated more or less seriously based on if anyone was seriously hurt.
