Titans to cut Shonn Greene

Posted by Michael David Smith on June 16, 2015, 9:28 AM EDT

Shonn Greene has declined to show up to the Titans’ voluntary offseason workouts. Now the Titans have decided to tell him not to bother showing up to today’s first mandatory practice.

The Titans are releasing Greene this morning, Jim Wyatt of the Tennessean reports.

That comes as no surprise. Greene was due $3.25 million this season, the final year on the three-year, $10 million contract he signed with the Titans in 2013. Greene managed only 392 yards last season, so he wasn’t much more than a mediocre running back, and a $3.25 million salary is more than mediocre running backs can expect in today’s NFL.

The Titans drafted running back Bishop Sankey last year and David Cobb this year, so they’re moving on to younger, cheaper running backs. And Greene will move on to somewhere else, where he’ll surely have to take significantly less money than he was making in Tennessee.

That would be an interesting pickup, he would add some size to the mix.

He couldn't cover shit at USC and it only got worse in the NFL. Like many of us said, he's nothing more than Roy Williams v2.0

The laughable part is that immediately following his release, this turd claims that he "wants" to change positions; even though he said that he'd never play anything but QB in the NFL. Obviously, this was before the NFL told him - for a second time - that it doesn't want him as a QB.

To be fair Roy looked like a really good player early in his career. He just burned out and got out of shape really quickly. Mays never showed that potential.

They use the term "secondary help" very loosely.

I remember when Fred Davis looked like the real deal.

NFL to better police fumble scrums

Posted by Mike Florio on July 17, 2015, 3:28 PM EDT

As the football-following world continues to wait for the NFL to finalize new rules for the handling of footballs in the wake of #DeflateGate, the NFL will have a new approach to the process of attempting to get a handle on footballs that were mishandled.

NFL V.P. of officiating Dean Blandino tells John Kryk of the Toronto Sun that the league will pay close attention to the manner in which players remove opponents from fumble scrums. Per Kryk, Blandino says the league will “strictly enforce” a prohibition on the yanking of players from these pile ups.

Violations will result in a 15-yard penalty. Offenders presumably will be fined, too.

The goal is to further promote player safety. So while plenty of nasty stuff likely will still happen at the bottom of the pile away from the eyes of the officials, the visible stuff that occurs on the fringes of the process will result in consequences.

Why is that? I guess I just don't get the point of this. You're adding needless penalties potentially to a game. This has no real impact on the game. A guy getting pulled off the pile doesn't give either team an advantage. I guess I just don't see anything positive coming out of this. It's taking something that isn't a problem and inserting more officiating and penalties. It can only potentially make the game worse.

Jaguars discard Ace Sanders

Posted by Josh Alper on July 17, 2015, 4:16 PM EDT

Jaguars General Manager David Caldwell has drafted 25 players since joining the team in 2013, but only 24 of them remain on the roster as of Friday.

The Jaguars announced that they have waived wide receiver Ace Sanders, who was a fourth-round pick in the 2013 draft.

Sanders played in 27 games during his two seasons with the Jags and caught 57 passes for 539 yards and a touchdown. He also served as the team’s main punt returner in each season, averaging 6.4 yards per return on 57 tries.

Sanders caught 51 passes as a rookie in 2013, but dropped to six last season after the Jags added several rookie receivers to the roster. Sanders also hurt himself by drawing a four-game suspension from the league for violating the league’s substance-abuse policy.

The Jaguars added Rashad Greene in the fifth round of this year’s draft and he’ll join Marquise Lee, Allen Robinson, Allen Hurns, Bryan Walters and Tandon Doss in the competition for roles in the now Ace-less receiving group. Walters, Greene and Doss could also contend for punt return duties.

It's apparently an injury concern, though I've never heard of a player missing games because they were injured from being unprepared for a violent yank from behind.

It's not coming from nowhere though, so I imagine enough players have complained or enough trainers have logged time treating pains related to this.

Wow.
Whotta dummy.

I bet the Seahawks are appreciative.

He is no world beater, but he is a decent left tackle.

They are going to rake him over the coals.
