Jason Garrett: Dez Bryant to have more tests on ailing foot

ESPN Staff Writer

IRVING, Texas – The Dallas Cowboys have yet to rule Dez Bryant out of Sunday’s game against the Washington Redskins, but the wide receiver will have more tests this week on his surgically-repaired right foot and his ailing ankle.

When asked if there is a worry if there is another fracture in Bryant’s foot, coach Jason Garrett said, “just evaluating where he is.”

Bryant had surgery Sept. 14 to repair a broken fifth metatarsal in his right foot suffered in the season opener. He had a bone graft done at the time of the surgery to help promote healing, which is how the Cowboys dealt with the same fracture to defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence last year. He later had a stem-cell injection for his foot in October.

Bryant did not practice last week and was ruled out of the Buffalo Bills’ game on Saturday when he did not make the trip. Earlier in the month Bryant said he was feeling as good as he had felt all season but Garrett said the receiver’s foot and ankle have gotten progressively worse in the last few weeks.

With a 4-11 record and nothing to play for, why not sit Bryant against Washington?

“We just want to be pure in our evaluation of the status of the player,” Garrett said.

Garrett said how the team has handled Bryant would have been the same had they been in playoff contention.

“We really try to evaluate our players’ health independent of who we’re playing and when we’re playing, and where we’re playing and what the records are,” Garrett said. “And that was the case with Dez, his foot and his ankle have been bothering him for a few weeks now and just thought it was the right thing for him to do was not to play. He wasn’t able to practice, so that’s the decision we made. So we’ll see how he is here in the next couple of days and make our next best decision.”

Bryant has missed six games this season and has not had the impact he or the Cowboys hoped this season, catching 31 passes for 401 yards and three touchdowns.

The Cowboys will be without safety Barry Church, who broke the humerus bone in his right arm against the Bills, and defensive end David Irving, who fractured his left wrist in the game. Garrett said cornerback Morris Claiborne, who has missed the last two games with a hamstring strain, is day by day.

“Anyone who is healthy is going to play in the game,” Garrett said. “If they’re not healthy, they won’t play in the game.”

Another sign of how badly coached this team is, he had to rush Romo and Bryant back only to cause lingering effects so nice they weren't fully healed.. Stupid!
