Jason Garrett: Wrong approach to assume everything's good just because Tony Romo's returning

IRVING -- Although head coach Jason Garrett wouldn't definitively say that Tony Romo would start Sunday against the Dolphins, all signs point to the franchise quarterback making his return.

"Here's what we're going to do, we're going to take it day by day this week," Garrett said. "And we're going to let him practice. And if he practices well, he's going to play in the game. And we anticipate him practicing well. So we're excited about that opportunity. But we just have to see how it goes."

While serving an early Thanksgiving Day meal on Monday, Romo was asked if he was going to play Sunday.

"Oh yeah," Romo responded. "There's a pretty good chance."

Romo has missed the last seven games while on the injured reserve/designated to return list because of a fractured left collarbone he suffered in Week 2. The Cowboys have lost all seven games in his absence.

So is it realistic to expect Romo to save the season?

"Tony is a good football player and he's been a good football player in this league for a long time," Garrett said. "He's a starting quarterback for our team for a reason. He's made a big impact on our team for a reason. He's made a big impact on our team since the time he became the starter, so we feel really good about the contributions he can make.

"Certainly, when you bring a player like Tony Romo back in, there's an expectation he's going to make a positive difference for your team. Just like any time you lose a starter and he comes back, these guys start for a reason.

"But if we feel like just because Tony is back everything is good that's the wrong approach. We have to get better in all three areas. We have to coach better, we have to play better. All three phases of our football team have to play better, and we think Tony can help us do that."

Romo has participated in some individual drills and scout team work the previous two weeks. This week he's expected to have a similar schedule to last season when he didn't practice Wednesdays but was a full participant on Thursdays and Fridays.

"He's had a good couple of weeks out on the practice field with us," Garrett said. "His rehab has gone exactly like we wanted it to go. He'll be back integrated with our team [Tuesday]. He'll go through meetings and walk-through and we're going to put him on a similar schedule that he was on last year with his practice days, more walk-through on Wednesday, more practice Thursday and Friday."
