Criticized for risky TD, Cowboys Joseph Randle's two-word response is 'six points'

By Jon Machota
Staff Writer

NEW ORLEANS -- Cowboys running back Joseph Randle scored his fourth rushing touchdown of the season Sunday night, but it didn't come without some controversy.

Early in the second quarter, the Cowboys had the ball first-and-goal from the one-yard line. Randle took the handoff from Brandon Weeden, jumped over the pile, spun in the air and extended the ball after taking the first blow. The ball came loose and was ruled a fumble, however, replay showed that the ball actually broke the plane before it was knocked out of Randle's right hand.

Although it helped give the Cowboys a 10-7 lead, head coach Jason Garrett and running backs coach Gary Brown were not pleased with Randle's decision to be so careless with the football.

"Obviously, it worked out," Garrett said. "We scored the touchdown there. He got in before the ball came out. But that is something that we discussed with him and our other running backs about how we want to handle that situation. It's a dangerous play when you extend the ball like that.

"It worked out for us tonight, but we don't want to do that in that situation."

What did Randle think of those who criticized his decision?

Randle was benched for the rest of the first half as Darren McFadden took over as the lead back. Randle finished with only 26 yards on 11 carries. He gained only one-yard on four second-half rushing attempts.

Shocking that this guy is a dope on whom we never should have relied. If only there had been some sort of clue that might have tipped us off .

I really think the Cowboys have this RB group backwards. You cant play physical football with finesse backs. You need to come out and pound your Hammer back all game long until they get tired. Run CMike until half time and tire them out. Then if you wanna hit them with the speed later after they are sucking wind its a diffrent story. You cant wear a team out with 210 pound Randal and Mcfadden who goes down with the wind.

This season will turn the Emmitt vs Barry's debate on its head.

Doesn't really change my opinion on that. I always said a reliable ground game would win you more games than one rush for 60 yards another for 30 and 23 more rushes for 30. That looks like a great day running the football on paper but it's really one TD and a lot of punting.

Walter Payton, Eric Dickerson, Adrian Peterson, LaDanian Tomlinson, and Jim Brown were all guys who could make the tough runs and get consistent yardage, but also had the speed to take it to the house (Herschel Walker could too, but he was misused after leaving Dallas).

Word is that the Cowboys had already told Randle before the game specifically NOT to try to dive over the pile and stretch the ball over the goal line, but he went ahead and did it anyway. If I were Garrett, I'd start Michael this weekend to send a message.

What a hard head. A great reason to sit his ass.
