National writer: Cowboys blew it by not going after Mark Sanchez, Michael Vick, others

The Dallas Morning News

The Dallas Cowboys have made a change at starting quarterback, choosing to replace Brandon Weeden with Matt Cassel.

Charles Robinson of Yahoo! Sports blasted the Cowboys in his column Tuesday for failing to secure a reliable backup.

Robinson wrote the Cowboys made two key mistakes.

One: They kept Brandon Weeden, who had insane ball security issues.

Wrote Robinson: "Mark Sanchez was on his way to a guaranteed release by the New York Jets in the 2014 offseason, something that occurred a little over a week after the Cowboys signed Weeden. And while Sanchez carried his own ball security and accuracy issues, he also had a 33-29 record as a starter (and was 4-2 in the playoffs). He was a better option than Weeden. Instead, he's one of the NFL's best backups - for the division rival Philadelphia Eagles. If not Sanchez in 2014, what about Shaun Hill, one of the league's best backups for years, who was a free agent in both 2014 and 2015? Or Ryan Fitzpatrick, who was plucked off the trade block for virtually nothing this past offseason? Or Michael Vick, who waited until the end of training camp to land on a roster?"

Robinson went on to rip Cassel, whom the Cowboys acquired in a trade from the Buffalo Bills shortly after Tony Romo went down with an injury.

Wrote Robinson: When the Buffalo Bills acquired him from the Minnesota Vikings last March, they did it with the belief that he could come in, win the starting job, hand the ball off, not screw up a talented defense and hopefully complete 18 opportunistic passes a game. By the time Buffalo reached minicamp in June, Cassel didn't look right, wasn't throwing well, wasn't leading and had lost control of his opportunity. The only fresh, true film on him is from 2014, and the only productive film on him is from 2013. His legs don't seem as strong as that guy. His arm doesn't seem as live. He isn't that starting quality guy anymore. The Vikings agreed, or Cassel would be backing up Teddy Bridgewater in Minnesota right now. Same with the Bills, or he'd be backing up Tyrod Taylor.

Yet here we are, with Dallas hoping he might be that guy because Romo is injured and Weeden is, in the understated words of Jerry Jones, "limited."

They were just enamored with the fact Weeden was a former 1st rounder regardless of the fact he was a reach and then sucked since entering the league. They went all or nothing on Romo and we're paying for it.

I think they wanted to kick the tires and intended for him to be third string at least in the short term. Then they were blindsided by Orton's holdout and fake retirement.

However, even if you could excuse them for 2014, that doesn't excuse not making a move in 2015 in the off-season. Instead they crossed their fingers that Romo would stay healthy. Just like they crossed their fingers that this running back group would work.

It's a shame because coming off a 12 win season they really blew an opportunity.

Actually I am perplexed at the Cowboys personnel management and coaching staff regarding Weedin. The coaching staff apparently has little confidence in him evidenced by the game plans they have devised for him plus not reallocating the receiving corp alignment to accommodate the down the field passing attack. If they had those reservations why were they not addressed in the off season rather than waiting until he was called on to take the reins? Now the outcry is to replace him and the staff is doing so with someone that on paper doesn't seem to be much if any better. This seems to be a public appeasement move. If there isn't a a strategy to provide a vertical passing system as well then it would seem to be a sham. It reeks of potential incompetence from more than just a quarterback.

Everyone needs to think back to all those times that you said, screamed, or thought that Romo sucked and slap yourself for each and every one.

And all the times people complained about him going down in the pocket instead of standing in and taking the hit.

You should know by now this regime is reactive. Not proactive except have the secondary.

There has been some proactive moves made in the last 3 or so years to give the indication that things are changing for the better. The offensive a n d defensive lines have been adequately addressed and the personnel manager has made other indications, of a positive nature. It is a mystery to me why the back up QB position has been handled in the manner it has been. Weedin has apparently been portrayed as being capable of filling in with the systems that are in place. Garrett pretty much echoed that when Romo went down then he apparently signed off on the game plans that were anemic toward competing successfully. It's a puzzling outcome.

Wasn't and still am not a fan of Sanchez and the media would have blown things out of proportion if we brought in Vick but the coaching staff obviously sat on their hands when they should have done something.

Vick looked pretty good for the Steelers the other night, and when its all said and done he made some great plays and won the game for them.

Weeden has that "Jerry of yesteryear pick" wink and smile stench about him. Like the Cowboys just know something about the guy no one else has discovered.

It is like their mentality is if Romo gets hurt, then fuck it, we have no chance with any other QB.

But they paid decent money to a decent backup before in Orton.

I dunno. Maybe they are still butt hurt over how he fucked them over.

Everything about Weedon screams "Chad Hutchinson" from his lack of pocket presence, to his failed baseball career, to his weird puffy face.

There were a bunch of guys that could have been brought in to compete with Weeden for the backup QB job and it's pretty inexcusable that they didn't throw at least someone in there to compare his performance against.

Jerry loves collecting old 1st round picks and dreaming about a team full of blue-chippers.

The Steelers know what they are doing, and for some reason the Colts just luck into shit.
