Anthony Hitchens is Cowboys' Justin Durant insurance
March, 10, 2015

By Todd Archer | ESPNDallas.com

IRVING, Texas -- the Dallas Cowboys wanted to keep Justin Durant, but they did not want to have to pay a lot of money to keep him.

With ESPN’s Adam Schefter reporting that Durant is signing with the Atlanta Falcons, it’s safe to say the Cowboys’ money was not in the same neighborhood of the Falcons.

Health was a big reason why the Cowboys weren’t ready to commit a lot of dollars. In his two seasons with the Cowboys, Durant played in as many games (16) as he missed (16).

His 2014 season ended prematurely because of a torn biceps that he recently tweeted has completely healed.

Despite playing in only six game, Durant was sixth on the defense in tackles with the coaches crediting him with 59 tackles to go with four tackles for loss, two quarterback pressures, one interception, four pass breakups, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery.

He was remarkably productive, and he could play all three linebacker spots.

The Cowboys have another linebacker who can play all three spots already on the roster in Anthony Hitchens. He started games at middle, weakside, and strongside linebacker as a rookie, and the coaches credited him with 100 tackles. He also had three tackles for loss, two quarterback pressures, one interception and four pass deflections.

The Cowboys will welcome back Sean Lee to the starting lineup after he missed last season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament. They could also keep free agents Rolando McClain and/or Bruce Carter, however, Carter is also expected to be priced over what the Cowboys want to pay.

So, now that Durant has gone elsewhere, why not Curtis Lofton? Hitchens/Lofton/Lee would work for me as a starting LB corps.

"Justin Durant insurance" is a ridiculous phrase. As if he's this stud that will be hard to replace.

To say he is in any way Durant insurance is a disservice to Hitchens.

Hitchens' game elevated big time. By the playoffs he and Lawrence were the ones stepping up for Dallas while Durant, Melton, and McClain were nursing injuries.

That was evidence of a quality of drafting and coaching by the Cowboys we haven't seen in way too long.

Keep drafting talent, signing UDFA's, and patching journeymen to fill any gaps because we finally have a coaching staff in Dallas that knows what they are doing.

With this strategy Dallas doesn't need big-name, bank-breaking free agents.

No kidding. I'd rather have Hitchens starting than Durant

I really hope we get McClain back...with him in the middle flanked by Lee and Hitchens...that is really nice. Big fan of Kendricks in this draft too.
