Is Steve Loney the Dallas Cowboys’ new assistant offensive line coach?

Jerry Jones said last month that former Cowboys offensive lineman Marc Colombo was the “leader in the clubhouse” to become the team’s next assistant offensive line coach.

However, Arkansas coach Bret Bielema tweeted Monday morning that Steve Loney is headed to Dallas. The Cowboys have not confirmed any new moves to their coaching staff.

Before joining the Arkansas staff last season, Loney spent the previous six years as the offensive line coach in St. Louis and an assistant O-line coach in Tampa Bay. Loney also worked three years with Cowboys offensive coordinator Scott Linehan when Linehan was calling the offense in Minnesota.

The Cowboys are looking to fill the position after Bill Callahan left for Washington and Frank Pollack was promoted to O-line coach.

Colombo, who played right tackle for the Cowboys from 2005 to 2010, worked in the team’s personnel department last year and traveled with the coaching staff to Arizona last month for the Pro Bowl.

This would be a good move, IMO.

Loney does have more extensive experience, knows Linehan and his tendencies and most importantly, knows the zone blocking scheme.

Colombo is a good story, but I am not sure he is well versed enough in the scheme to make up for the loss of Callahan. This would be a good gap to fill the experience void.

Sounds like a more meritorious and thought out hire. Colombo sounded like a good ol' uncle Jerry hire. Hopefully Garrett is shutting down some of the bullshit that got him hired in the first place. Maybe that's why new blood like Ryan, Callahan, Linehan, and Kiffin/Marinelli have been courted instead of guys we'd associate more with the family photo.

Weird thing is, no one even knew he was working for Arkansas. He wasn't coaching. It sounds like he was an advanced scout. It seems odd to me that the guy has such a long resume and is taking non-coaching college jobs and now asst. oline coach jobs at his age.

Sometimes guys get overlooked and fall through the cracks because of their age. Parcells basically saved Paul Pasqualoni's career. Who knows if the guy would have caught on anywhere after getting fired at Syracuse if Bill hadn't picked him out and decided he could probably coach something.

ESPN: Cowboys hire Steve Loney as assistant OL coach

By Todd Archer | February 11, 2015 12:30:08 PM PST

IRVING, Texas -- While there has been no official announcement yet, the Dallas Cowboys have hired Steve Loney as their assistant offensive line coach, according to multiple sources.

Loney will replace Frank Pollack, who was promoted to the head offensive line job following Bill Callahan’s departure for the Washington Redskins after the season. Marc Colombo, who worked in the scouting department last season and helped coach the offensive line at the Pro Bowl, will continue as an offensive assistant. Colombo played for the Cowboys from 2005-10.

This will be the third time Loney has worked with Cowboys offensive coordinator Scott Linehan. Loney worked on Linehan’s staff with the St. Louis Rams in 2008 and was the Minnesota Vikings' offensive line coach for two seasons during Linehan’s run as their coordinator.

Loney was a consultant at Arkansas last season following a two-year stay as the assistant offensive line coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2012-13.

Sounds good to me. Again, it's smart. He knows what is going on and is experienced.

As long as he isn't prone to Monte-style naps, he is a good hire.

Colombo can keep proving himself.
