Report: Saints' Rob Ryan on his way out as 'hate' between him and Payton grows

Rob Ryan's departure from the Saints' coaching staff is "inevitable" thanks to a growing rift between him and head coach Sean Payton that borders on "hate," CBSSports.com reports.

Citing team sources, the website said Sunday that the relationship between Payton and his defensive coordinator has been "rapidly deteriorating" all season, with sideline verbal confrontations during games and an increasing dislike between them. Not coincidentally, the Saints' defense has fallen off badly since last season, when Ryan joined the staff from the Cowboys and improved it tremendously.

This year, the 4-7 Saints have suffered from injuries and player losses on defense. While they are still in first place in their division, the Saints enter Sunday's game in Pittsburgh on a three-game losing streak, all at home.

I don't think Ryan was the reason this defense was so terrible -- the personnel was (though he certainly didn't "coach 'em up" all that much either).

But he seems to love making himself the easy scapegoat by wearing out his welcome quickly.

His personality wouldn't be a problem if he could actually coach or develop a halfway decent defensive scheme.

Payton does seem to publicly berate him on the sideline quite a bit.

During the Saints game on Sunday, Payton was arguing with another assistant as well. I wonder if it's a Payton thing instead of a Ryan thing.
