The Film Don't Lie: Cowboys

LONDON -- A weekly look at what the Dallas Cowboys must fix:
In the first seven games of the season, the Cowboys had the best third-down offense in the NFL. Tony Romo said third-and-8 seemed the same as third-and-short. They were rolling, converting 57.4 percent of the time.
Over the past three games, the Cowboys have converted just 33 percent of the time. They were 4-of-13 against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Two of the failed third-down tries came late when the Cowboys were well ahead and killing the game. One was a kneeldown by Brandon Weeden, the other was a 5-yard run by Lance Dunbar. They converted just three of their first 10 tries on third down when Romo was the quarterback. They converted on third-and-1 (DeMarco Murray run), third-and-2 (Jason Witten TD catch) and third-and-4 (Gavin Escobar catch).
The Cowboys had three scoring plays of 35 yards or more in a game for the first time since Week 5 of the 2009 season. They have big-play capability in the air and on the ground, but they need to be able to grind out games.
That was a big part of the formula in their six-game winning streak. Perhaps the best thing it did was keep the defense off the field. They have got to use the bye week to find their rhythm on third downs again.
