Sources: Cowboys have concerns in giving Dez Bryant big-money deal

Dallas Cowboys management has significant concerns about giving star wideout Dez Bryant a massive guarantee in a long-term contract based, in part, on off-field concerns with Bryant, multiple league sources told Yahoo Sports.

The Cowboys have assisted Bryant in dealing with anger management and related issues, including setting up sessions with behavioral specialists and therapists, according to sources familiar with the team's efforts and thinking. According to multiple sources, the Cowboys have made a number of contract offers to the wide receiver that provided him with meaningful financial guarantees, while providing protections for themselves if any off-field issues came to affect his ability to perform on the field.

For his part, Bryant has pushed for the Cowboys to give him a deal that is in line with the market for the game's elite wide receivers. In guaranteed money, Detroit's Calvin Johnson leads the pack with $48.75 million.

Bryant told reporters Sunday that he would be "highly disappointed" if he and the Cowboys couldn't reach an agreement on an extension and he was slapped with the franchise tag. Bryant is in the final season of his rookie deal that will pay him about $1.7 million. After parting ways with his former agent, Eugene Parker, last week, Bryant hired Jay Z's Roc Nation sports agency for representation.

The most widely reported behavioral issue Bryant dealt with was a domestic dispute between he and his mother in July of 2012. In that instance Bryant was arrested and charged with allegedly assaulting his mother, Angela, by grabbing her T-shirt and hair and hitting her across the face with a baseball hat. Charges in that matter were conditionally dismissed in November of 2012, according to the Dallas Morning News. Today, a spokesperson from the Dallas County District Attorney's office indicated that Bryant completed the terms of his conditional dismissal, but there "was still red tape holding up the paperwork" to close the file on the matter.

In wake of that incident, the Cowboys and Bryant reportedly agreed to a series of protective measures, including a security detail, and bans on alcohol use and strip club visits.

I'm very curious as to who wrote this.

EDIT: I see it's a yahoo piece. Very credible.

I think this is overblown. Jerruh loves him some Dez.

like any of the therapists, anger mgmt issues or whatever makes Jerruh sleep any less.

Yeah, but Jerry loves his money, too, and he was vindicated for protecting himself with Lee. Combine the off field issues with inconsistent on-field production, and whatever the issue may or may not be with his back, and we'd be foolish not to protect against what we already know to be threats.

Dez has struggled the past couple of games, but a scared Romo and a POS like Weeden have certainly not helped his cause.

Probably just posturing. Dez is Jerry's most successful pet project of all time. He'll pay Dez a fortune and be happy to do it.

Maybe if Weedhead had any touch or accuracy at all, Dez would have made some catches. Weeden seriously is so fucking awful it hurts my feelings. Throws a 6 yard pass like he's trying to blow up the moon. Fuck Weeden and anyone that thinks he should be on an NFL team.

If those were the reasons why he wasn't producing, I'd agree. But he did nothing to help Weeden last week. No separation, poor routes and honestly at times it didn't look like he wanted to make the effort.

There's some truth to this. Bryant lacks the speed normally associated with elite WRs. Thing is, so did Michael Irvin and Cris Carter, and they turned out OK. Bryant has done more than either at the same point in his career.

Also be careful when you say "should". Try to really compare with WRs who have elite paychecks. Face it, our exposure to "elite" WRs are mainly through highlight reels or by watching them tear up our pathetic secondary.

The reality is most WRs can be taken out of a given game, especially when their coordinators don't mix things up to get them going.

And you picked up all of this how?

You watching the all 22?

How do you make and effort on balls thrown behind you and at your feet.

Dez has more TDs in his first 4 1/2 years than Terry Glenn had in his 11 year career.

Let's also not forget the game he won against the Texans by catching the same pass twice in overtime. The guy's clutch as hell.

He's also stayed out of trouble for awhile now.

I feel like there isn't a guy on the team who deserves the pay day more than Dez.

If he wants Megatron money, feh. His play the last several weeks has been a little less than elite.

Hyperbole much? Where as he didn't have very good games the last two weeks, he had 151 yards against the Giants 3 weeks ago. Let's not start acting like he is invisible.

Not sure if you noticed, but they tend to show replays after every play.

I'm not worrying about Dez having poor numbers the last couple weeks. He's a player that demands a double team, and when all is said and done, he's still a top 5 WR easily.

Washington blitzed Romo so hard, he was shitting himself at the snap. and for some reason, we had no answer. And then a game with Weeden? :lol Please.

It's not like Dez is the only WR to ever have poor numbers over a two week stretch. A couple weeks ago, people were ready to blow him. Now people are questioning if we should resign him? Come on, now.

It seems to be a common theme here.

People are either all in or out completely. No middle ground.

Dez is clearly a top 10 WR and should be paid as such, there is no question that you resign him as long as his demands are within reason.

Not after every play and certainly not every replay has Dez's routes in them.

I am not saying he did not do any of this, but I did not see much it from my tv and I have watched it twice.

Me: "A little less than elite".

You: "Hyperbole much?"

How the hell is saying what I said hyperbole?
