Your take sounds wise. I'm not trying to be antagonistic to you personally, but the evidence doesn't support what you're saying.I think you know the cases where it did work, and where qb's were flipped for picks, so I won't bother looking them up. What I'm saying is GM's should be drafting qb's every year. I don't even care if you wait til the 7th round to draft them. Just draft at least one. It's better than looking for special teams help late in the draft.
Here are the starting QB's taken after the 3rd round or UDFA.
Ryan Fitzpatrick, Titans
Tom Brady, NE
Tony Romo, Dallas
They do not get the chance to develop. Nick Foles, Mike Glennon, and Russell Wilson were 3rd rounders, and they made it only because their starters got hurt or played for shit. After that you fall off a cliff.
So drafting QB only makes sense in the top 3 rounds.
One case study to watch will be Ryan Mallet. He was highly touted prospect to fell big time to the 5th round. Will New England re-sign him next year or did they "develop him for someone else"?
Brady in the 6th was a million to one and predated the current CBA. Wilson was Seattle's 3rd rounder and has a 4 year contract.Seattle and New England huh...pretty good teams.
