Dallas Cowboys DT Henry Melton says he’s healthy and ready to play Thursday if called upon

IRVING — Henry Melton hasn’t played during the preseason. And he’s not certain he’ll be in action Thursday in the team’s final exhibition game against Denver. But the defensive tackle, the Cowboys’ prized free-agent acquisition of the offseason, insists he’s healthy after recovering from a groin injury he suffered earlier this month.

Melton hasn’t appeared in a game since last September, when he tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.

“I’m feeling great,” he said. “Just trying to get better every day, work hard and be a beast for the season.”

If Melton plays Thursday, he won’t be the only starter on the field. Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said he anticipates Orlando Scandrick participating with his four-game suspension looming. Garrett also asserted that cornerback Morris Claiborne, who hasn’t played this preseason because of knee tendinitis and a sprained AC joint in his right shoulder, would also be available if the Cowboys elected to use him. But no final decision has been made regarding Melton and Claiborne.

“There is some real value for those guys to play in the game,” Garrett said. “You obviously balance that with giving them a chance to rest even more before the game next week.”
