I haven't been this torn up over a release since Emmitt's back 2003.

This one stings.

BTW...what was his total contribution to the Cowboys? 20 minutes of one preseason game?
I believe he played exactly nine snaps in the Hall of Fame game last year.

Dallas Cowboys cut-down analysis

August, 26, 2014

By Todd Archer | ESPNDallas.com

Most significant move: The Matt Johnson era has not officially ended, but the safety was waived by the Dallas Cowboys on Tuesday as part of the roster moves to reach the NFL-mandated 75-player limited.

A fourth-round draft pick in 2012, Johnson never played in a game. He missed his rookie season with recurring hamstring injuries as well as a back injury. He suffered an ankle injury in the 2013 preseason and was placed on injured reserve after having surgery.

Despite his limited practices, the Cowboys liked Johnson’s potential and kept waiting for him to get healthy. He suffered a hamstring injury early in training camp this summer in Oxnard, California, and was unable to return to practice. He returned to Dallas early to see if back problems were causing the hamstring issues but no relation was found.

If Johnson clears waivers, he would revert to injured reserve and the Cowboys could eventually receive an injury settlement.

Cowboys remain patient: By placing Amobi Okoye on the reserve/non-football illness list, the Cowboys are buying more time on the veteran defensive tackle. He will be unable to play in the first six games of the regular season but he will be able to continue his conditioning work as he attempts to return from anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis, a brain disease that left him in a coma for three months last year. Okoye was cleared for full football activities by his doctor on Aug. 14, but the team is choosing to be cautious in his return after such a long layoff with the hope he could return by midseason.

Cowboys' moves: QB Caleb Hanie, WR Chris Boyd, TE Jordan Najvar (waived/injured), G Wayne Tribue, DL Adewale Ojomo, DE Ben Gardner (injured reserve), DT Amobi Okoye (reserve/NFI), LB DeVonte Holloman (waived/injured), CB Justin Green (waived injured), S Johnny Thomas (waived injured), S Matt Johnson (waived injured), P Tom Hornsey, LS Casey Kreiter

The Caleb Hanie release means that either Weeden plays the whole game or they give up a lot of film on Dustin Vaughan.

Big deal.

And along the same lines, Alex Tanney is available again. The Bucs just cut his ass.

Scout’s Notebook: Final Word On Tuesday’s Cuts

Posted 2 hours ago

Bryan Broaddus

Football Analyst/Scout

Waived:

WR Chris Boyd: The year off from football did him no favors. Love his height but did not always see him separate in routes. Would physically get beat up off the line and wasn’t as consistent catching the ball as he needed to be.

P Tom Hornsey: Was added to the roster late when Cody Mandell proved he couldn’t handle the responsibilities of being an NFL player. My initial impression of Hornsey’s work was how awful he could look in pregame -- then he gets to the game and he just hammers the ball. When I did see him get a chance to hold for Dan Bailey, I knew that he had little chance to make the roster.

LS Casey Kreiter: Was impressed with his work during training camp and in these preseason games. Would not be one bit surprised to see him snapping in the NFL this season. Accuracy was strong.

DE Adewale Ojomo: Better suited to play as a defensive end but had to take snaps inside at tackle. Just not strong enough to handle playing inside like that. Physically it was a bad matchup for him.

G Wayne Tribue: Reminded me physically of those guards that played in the 1970’s for the Los Angeles Rams, with their big barrel chests and short arms and legs. For a man his size, did not play strong and struggled with the necessary feet to sustain his blocks.

Released:

QB Caleb Hanie: Will be a quarterback that will sit on many Emergency Boards around the league this fall. Had some nice practices when he was called on to throw those drills working with the tight ends and linebackers. He still showed that he had something left in the tank against the Ravens early in the preseason, as well. Not the prettiest in the way he handles the position but did nothing to embarrass himself.

Waived/Injured:

TE Jordan Najvar: Freak injury in Miami late in that contest. Would have liked to have seen him get to the practice squad, get some work on the scout team and develop some strength. Now heading to the injured reserve, he will have plenty of time to work on that strength.

S Matt Johnson: On a personal note I feel terrible for this player because I know that he has the talent and ability to play in this league. It’s a shame that these scouts that fought for him and the coaches that stuck with him will never get to see him line up and play here.

CB Justin Green: Would have been nice to see him get an entire training camp with this club, but that wasn’t the case. After getting a few snaps against the Ravens, I was looking forward to seeing him play against the Dolphins and get some extensive work, but a shoulder injury robbed him of that opportunity.

LB DeVonte Holloman:The loss of Holloman in my book is right up there with some of the major ones that this defense has had to endure with Sean Lee and DeMarcus Lawrence. Holloman was this defense’s ace in the hole when it came to the number of linebacker positions that he could cover along with his special teams work. Every team needs a guy like Holloman on the roster. He will be missed.

CB Johnny Thomas: Will always remember him knocking a ball away from Terrance Mitchell in the Ravens game when it appeared that Mitchell had tracked the ball well in flight and was about to secure it for a sure interception. It was a nice range play but the wrong player.

Reserve/Injured:

DE Ben Gardner: I really thought this young man would have helped the defense with his high effort and motor play, but instead he will just get more work in the weight room developing his body. There are some good traits here that can be used in the future.

Reserve/NFI:

DT Amobi Okoye: I am honestly surprised that he has a chance to once again resume his career after a serious medical condition. His 2012 tape for the Bears brought him here and the willingness of the front office to keep him around shows that there could be a future for him at some point this season.
