Falcons get down to 75 players

Posted by Josh Alper on August 24, 2014, 5:53 PM EDT

We haven’t seen a sneak preview of this week’s Hard Knocks, but it’s a good bet that some of the episode will focus on the 11 players given their pink slips on Sunday.

It’s a staple of the show, which means defensive end Theo Agnew, linebacker Brendan Daley, linebacker Darin Drakeford, safety Devonta Glover-Wright, wide receiver Julian Jones, quarterback Jeff Mathews, linebacker Walker May, running back Jerome Smith, wide receiver Tramaine Thompson, tight end Brian Wozniak and safety Tyrell Johnson may find themselves with some extended screen time while they hand in their playbooks.

The Falcons got the rest of the way to 75 players with four moves involving injured players. Linebacker Marquis Spruill and offensive lineman Mike Johnson were both placed on injured reserve, with Johnson’s injury robbing them of some needed depth in the wake of tackle Sam Baker’s latest knee injury.

Wide receiver Drew Davis and safety Zeke Motta will go on the regular season version of the PUP list, which means they’ll need to wait six weeks before practicing or playing in the regular season.

Report: Patriots release Tommy Kelly and Will Smith

Posted by Josh Alper on August 24, 2014, 5:45 PM EDT

The Patriots defense suffered with defensive tackle Tommy Kelly out of the lineup last year after a torn ACL, but it looks like his return to the team’s lineup will be a short one.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reported Sunday that Kelly will be one of the players dropped from the roster in New England as the Patriots make their way to 75 players and Kelly confirmed it a short time later. Kelly played 50 snaps for the team over their first three preseason games and held up fairly well, leaving him without an explanation for why the team

“I don’t know but I enjoy my time and my teammates. I have no problem moving along with my career,” Kelly said, via Tom Curran of CSNNE.com.

Schefter also reports that longtime Saints defensive end Will Smith and linebacker James Anderson are also former Patriots. Smith was also trying to return from a torn ACL, but didn’t make much of an impact as a pass rusher this summer. Anderson led the Bears in tackles as a 16-game starter last year and should probably find some interest around the league now that he’s back on the open market.

Rob Jackson among early cuts in Washington

Posted by Josh Alper on August 24, 2014, 5:32 PM EDT

The Redskins have started the process of paring their roster down to 75 men by Tuesday’s deadline.

The most notable name among the 10 players involved in Sunday’s moves is linebacker Rob Jackson. Jackson joined the team as a seventh-round pick in 2008 and has played in 54 games for the team over the last six seasons.

Jackson spent most of that time as a backup to Brian Orakpo, but had 4.5 sacks, four interceptions, two forced fumbles and a touchdown while making 14 starts with Orakpo out of the lineup in the 2012 season. The Redskins drafted Trent Murphy in the second round this year and he’s moved into the spot that Jackson used to occupy on the depth chart.

Fullback Stephen Campbell, wide receiver Cody Hoffman, linebacker Jeremy Kimbrough, wide receiver Rashad Lawrence, safety Ross Madison, defensive end Jake McDonough, linebacker Adrian Robinson and defensive end Jeremy Towns were also cut on Sunday. Tight end Mike Caussin has been placed on injured reserve.

Bills cut DT Alan Branch, one day after DUI charge

By John Breech | CBSSports.com

August 24, 2014 11:55 am ET

The Buffalo Bills cut defensive tackle Alan Branch on Sunday, the team announced. The move comes only one day after Branch was charged with DUI, an incident causing him to miss Saturday's game against Tampa Bay.

Following the Bills 27-14 loss to the Buccaneers, coach Doug Marrone said Branch didn't play in the game because he had been arrested, but at that point, Marrone had zero details on the arrest.

"It was reported to me that he was arrested," Marrone said. "I'm going to meet with him [on Sunday]. I found out somewhere around noon time, midday. I just had too much on my mind. I tried to call him, couldn't get ahold of him. But I wanted to get ahold of him some other way, so I got ahold of him through other people and just said, 'Hey, I'll meet with you tomorrow.' "

At the time Marrone made the comments, it wasn't clear what Branch had been arrested for, but those details are now out. According to the Associated Press, Branch was arrested and charged with DUI on Saturday around 2 a.m., a mere 14 hours before Buffalo was slated to kick off against Tampa Bay.

Branch was taken into custody after authorities noticed him throwing up out of the driver's side of his car in the town of Cheektowaga, N.Y., a city about seven miles outside of Buffalo.

The 29-year-old failed a sobriety test and police said he had a blood-alcohol content of .14, well above the legal limit of .08.

Before being cut, the veteran defensive lineman had already been in hot water with the Bills. Branch chose not to show up for voluntary workouts this offseason and then when he showed up for training camp in July, he failed his conditioning test.

The Bills had signed Branch to a three-year extension in December.

No kidding. But watch us find an excuse to sign any of the "progress stoppers".

James Anderson would be able to make an easy transition to this D. Smith would at least be a pass rush specialist...since we don't have anyone that can rush the passer...and Kelly could slot right in next to Melton.

As an aside...I think NE is going to have a really stout D and these cuts kind of show the depth they think they have.

Dunno how we can afford not to take a run at Anderson.

The Cowboys should be all over these released DL.

They've got to at least go hard after one of them. They shouldn't just sit on their ass hoping Spencer and Melton bounce back, which is what they'll likely do.

I do think they will do some churning. The guy I want churned most though, Hayden, is the pet cat of the DC. I want Kelly bad.

Wasn't he the #1 recruit nationally at one point?
I still have doubt he is any worse than what we have at end. How does a player produce like he did and suddenly just suck? Seattle tried him at LB.

The Buffalo Bills have parted ways with 11 players, in an effort to get toward the 75-man roster limit that becomes effective on Tuesday.

Gone are quarterback Dennis Dixon, safety Derek Brim, punter Jake Dombrowski, receiver Tori Gurley, safety Jajuan Harley, kicker Dustin Hopkins, defensive tackle Damien Jacobs, center Mackey MacPherson, receiver Chris Summer, guard J.J. ‘Unga, and running back Ronnie Wingo.

Hopkins was a sixth-round pick of the Bills in 2013. But he’s a kicker; in a quarterback-driven league, the decision to drop Dixon could mean that the one-time Heisman candidate finally has been driven out of the league.

A fifth-round pick of the Steelers in 2008, Dixon last appeared in a regular-season game during the 2010 season.

The Texans have known for some time that they wouldn’t have offensive lineman David Quessenberry on their roster this season, but he didn’t officially make his way to injured reserve until Monday.

Quessenberry was diagnosed with lymphoma during the offseason vowed to “kick cancer’s butt” during a visit with his teammates after learning about the disease. We hope he does just that and then returns to the Texans in great shape in time for next season.

The procedural move with Quessenberry was one of 10 moves the Texans made on Monday to start whittling the roster down to 75 players. John McClain of the Houston Chronicle reports that the team also waived guard Sam Longo, wide receiver Joe Adams, wide receiver Alec Lemon, running back William Powell, defensive tackle David Hunter, defensive tackle Austin Brown, linebacker Terrance Lloyd, linebacker Lawrence Sidbury and cornerback Junior Mertile.

Houston has four more moves to make before Tuesday’s deadline to make their first round of cuts.

The Colts have started their journey to a 75-man roster on Monday morning by parting ways with 11 players.

As is often the case in the first round of cuts, the Colts haven’t made any surprising moves. The players let go were all long shots for roster spots when they joined the team and failed to change that outlook over the course of training camp.

The Colts waived cornerback Johnny Adams, cornerback Qua Cox (pictured), guard Andre Cureton, guard Marcus Hall, cornerback Kameron Jackson, wide receiver Nu’Keese Richardson, linebacker Jonathon Sharpe, safety David Sims, wide receiver Eric Thomas, wide receiver Tony Washington and fullback Cameron White.

Indianapolis is now down to 79 players, leaving them with four more moves to make to set their roster by Tuesdays deadline.
