Garrett says team still supports Josh Brent

January, 21, 2014

MOBILE, Ala. -- A Dallas County jury is deciding Tuesday whether former Dallas Cowboysdefensive lineman, Josh Brent is guilty of drunk driving, which resulted in the death of best friend and former practice squad player Jerry Brown, the Dallas Morning News reported.

The jury began deliberations around 11 a.m. CT, and asked the judge a question about evidence during the process.

Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said the team continues to support Brent. During the trial, current players Barry Church and Danny McCray testified and Sean Lee arrived to court on Tuesday to support Brent, according to the Dallas Morning News.

"Our support for Josh has been unwavering since the start of this thing and that simply continues," Garrett said from the Senior Bowl on Tuesday. "Obviously a very tragic situation for Jerry Brown and his family and for Josh Brent. This is a process you go through and we're supportive of him and were just hopeful the outcome is something that’s certainly justified and allows him to continue on with his life. It's a very tragic situation and that hasn't changed."

Garrett said he's followed the case, "from a distance."

In December 2012, Brent left a party and crashed his car as he was driving home with Brown as the passenger. Brown died on the scene. Brent had a blood alcohol level of 0.10, two times the legal limit of 0.08.

So a not guilty verdict means we have one starting DT for next year...

Josh Brent should be a fricking afterthought. The fact Garrett is even mentioning him is embarrassing.

I guess a guilty verdict will be our built-in excuse for next year. Old man Kiffin will get another free pass and likely be back in '15 too.

Is everything a process with Garrett?

Stephen Jones calls Sean Lee 'the leader of our football team' after show of support at Brent trial

Sean Lee’s show of support in the trial of Josh Brent is an example of his leadership, Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said.

“Certainly doesn’t surprise me. That’s Sean – the leader of our football team,” he said.

A jury deliberated for a second day Wednesday in Brent’s intoxication manslaughter trial. Brent played defensive tackle three seasons for the Cowboys until retiring last July, having missed the last four games of 2012 following his arrest after the one-car accident in which a teammate, linebacker Jerry Brown, died.

“Sean Lee’s just a class act, a leader, supportive of his teammates,” Jones said. “Not unlike Troy did with Michael many, many years ago. Leaders lead, and he’s showing Josh – they were teammates together – that he supports him.”

The fact that they are deliberating so long is probably good news for Brent.

Was there ever any thought that he wouldn't be found guilty? I thought it was pretty cut and dried.

Chance for probation. Could face up to 20 years in prison.
