Columnist Rick Gosselin answered questions in a chat Tuesday. Here are some highlights.

Question: Let's say hypothetically the cowboys win a playoff game. Big hypothetical. That means Jason will stay. Do you think this is good long term for the Cowboys?
Rick Gosselin: I know Jerry is pulling hard for that to happen. He doesn't want to hire another coach because the next one will be more expensive and have a higher profile. If, like you say, Garrett does win a playoff game, it would be good that he stays. At least he'd be making progress. And if he wins a playoff game, he will have done it with an underdog team in the throes of rebuilding. So he must have done a pretty good job coaching that 2014 bunch.

Question: I know they need to draft for Dline. But if Notre Dames Zack Martin was there in the first would you take him and kick him into guards you would then have a line of smith, Leary, Frederick, Martin, and free.
Rick Gosselin: You can't go wrong taking the best player on your board. But understand, the deeper you draft, the more options you have. The first pick of the draft may be a choice of two players. The fifth pick may be a choice of three players. The 10th pick may be a choice of four players, all graded about the same. My guess when the Cowboys go on the clock at 16 or 17, there will be 4-5 players they like about the same. Teams build their draft boards to address needs -- so the players they are considering at 16 or 17 would address needs. Teams that don't need a quarterback don't have them high on their draft board. Teams that may need offensive or defensive linemen will push them up the board. That said, I doubt you'd see a tight end as the 16th or 17th player on the Cowboys board. I'd be surprised in the final stack if the Cowboys have a tight end in their Top 100 -- even though there are some quality tight ends worthy of thirst three round selections.

Question: If AJ Mccarron was in the third round would you draft him?
Rick Gosselin: I'd take a QB in the fourth or fifth round. If you believe Romo is going to be here for the next 3-4 years, you'll have the chance to develop the heir apparent. I wouldn't mind drafting the QB from Eastern Illinois in those mid rounds.

Question: What should they do with witten? He's getting older but TE can play for awhile. So should they cowboys ride him till he breaks or try and trade him to get value before he does eventually break?
Rick Gosselin: With his contract, the Cowboys are locked into Witten for the next 2-3 seasons. They can only hope he's a slow ager. It's tough trading players in their 30s. You're not going to get the value you think a player of Witten's accomplishment is worth. If the Cowboys tried to move him at 27, teams would have been lining up to deal. But not at 32. His best years are behind him and the money is escalating.

Question: Do you think Jerry and Garrett are open to drafting heavy on defense and then letting those young guys play this season?
Rick Gosselin: They have to be open to it. They have no other choice. This defense needs help on the line, at linebacker and at safety and in salary cap jail they aren't going to be too active in free agency. What you draft is going to have to be what makes you better.

Question: Can you give me three reasons to have hope for the Cowboys defense next season?
Rick Gosselin:
1) Rod Marinelli
2) the 16th or 17th pick of the draft
30 young players like Holloman, Heath & Wilcox took their lumps and will be better players because of it in 2014.

Question: How long will this Michael Sam thing continue to be a story? I feel like once regular season games start and there's some actual news everybody is just going to let it be.
Rick Gosselin: As long as ESPN wants to make it a story. I'm sure it will continue to be a story at the combine. A week ago, I thought Johnny Manziel would have the largest press conference at the combine when he meets the media. Now I think the Sam press conference will be larger. It will probably be a story through the draft, and again at his first minicamp. Then we can all get back to football.

Question: Why are we not signing a QB? We have one healthy QB on roster in Orton. How bout Skelton or anyone? Am I missing something?
Rick Gosselin: The hope is the draft. But I wouldn't think the Cowboys would go high -- maybe fourth round at the earliest. I've felt all along the Cowboys need to get a young QB in the pipeline. With Romo's back, the Cowboys better start thinking about an order of progression at the position. The Cowboys have salary cap issues so they aren't in a position to go buy a veteran unless they go to the thrift shop.

Question: Is the window closing on the 49ers?
Rick Gosselin: Closing? It's still opening. Seattle holds the Lombardi Trophy but I would not be surprised if the 49ers win the West next season. They played much of this season without their best receiver (Michael Crabtree) and a chunk without their best pass rusher (Aldon Smith). I think San Francisco and Seattle are going to be good for a long time -- and Arizona and St. Louis aren't far behind in the division. Arizona went into Seattle in December and beat the Seahawks on the way to a 10-win, non-playoff season. The Rams were the youngest team in football last season and have two No. 1 picks in this draft -- plus a coach (Jeff Fisher) who knows how to win in this league.
