Dallas Cowboys officials believe team can improve next season just by getting healthy

The Dallas Cowboys want their draft picks this week – especially those in the early rounds – to contribute immediately.

However, Cowboys officials believe they can improve significantly next season just by getting healthy. Several injuries depleted the team’s depth last season as Dallas finished 8-8 for a second consecutive year.

In particular, 2012 fourth-round picks safety Matt Johnson and linebacker Kyle Wilber didn’t get much playing time last season because of injuries. Johnson never appeared in a game and didn’t even practice much because of hamstring injuries to both legs. The Cowboys believe Wilber and Johnson will push for starting spots in 2013.

“We have guys from last year’s draft that we feel like we haven’t even seen yet because of injury, so we expect some things from them in terms of competing with players on our team, competing for roster spots, competing for playing time,” Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said Monday. “Those are important additions to our team in 2013. We’d love to get some guys that start for our football team in this draft. Again, we have to be realistic about that. Certainly in the first couple of rounds, you anticipate starting players. As you get in the middle and later rounds, hopefully you draft well and get some guys who can find a role and a starting role as soon as possible.”
