Cowboys call up Keith Smith, put Morris Claiborne on IR

October, 4, 2014

By Todd Archer | ESPNDallas.com

IRVING, Texas -- For the second time in three weeks the Dallas Cowboys called up linebacker Keith Smith from the practice squad.

With Bruce Carter out of Sunday’s game against the Houston Texans because of a quadriceps strain, Smith was added to the 53-man roster. He played Sept. 21 against the St. Louis Rams when the Cowboys were missing Rolando McClain and Justin Durant because of groin injuries. He was released the next day and re-signed to the practice squad.

To make room for Smith, the Cowboys placed cornerback Morris Claiborne on injured reserve. Claiborne had season-ending knee surgery on Tuesday after getting hurt in the first quarter of last week's game against the New Orleans Saints.

Smith’s call-up would seem to indicate backup linebacker Korey Toomer is not ready to handle a role on defense. He joined the Cowboys on Sept. 1 after he was cut by the Seattle Seahawks. He has been active for two games, but has not seen any action.

"As much as anything else he needs to learn the system and learn what we’re asking him to do," coach Jason Garrett said on Friday. "He’s practicing well, and he’s working hard at it. But without training camp, without that background, he kind of has to learn on the run a little bit. He’s in that process right now."

Broaddus was mentioning something on one of the Talking Cowboys shows a few weeks about there being a distinct rift between the scouts and coaching staff, especially the defensive coaches. Toomer was a player the scouts wanted coming out in his draft and pushed hard to sign him when the Seahawks cut him. Apparently the staff isn't fond of him and he's been a healthy scratch the last couple of weeks. It also goes to show you that despite what some people think, this defense is not a bit like Seattle's, otherwise he wouldn't be struggling to catch on. Pete Carroll was raving about him in camp and how he had "got it" in relationship to their system.

He said that the reason the coaches aren't comfortable with him is because they aren't familiar with him. Short-sighted, IMO. Bring him up and let him play. You have to trust your scouts to do their jobs or what's the point in having them?

I think Garrett or one of the coaches is just pissed that a guy he didn't want got forced down his throat and is refusing to use the guy as a result.

I hope not. The team is showing great cohesion. We don't need this kind of dysfunction with the rest of the organization to hurt that cohesion.

Sure looks like it, given the fact we have been playing musical chairs at LB all season.
