Cowboys make several roster moves
May, 16, 2014

By Calvin Watkins | ESPNDallas.com

IRVING, Texas -- The Dallas Cowboys made some roster moves during the first day of the rookie minicamp Friday.

The biggest was signing defensive tackle Amobi Okoye to a two-year contract.

"We like a lot of things about him," coach Jason Garrett said. "He was a high draft pick a few years ago, a really young player coming out of school and he has a lot of talent. Rod [Marinelli] was around him in Chicago, we know him well, he's had an intimate-type relationship. So we think that's a real positive thing. He's had some health issues the last year or so where he lost a lot of weight. He's gained his weight back and we're waiting on some medical things. We feel like he has a chance to be a contributor on that defensive line."

Garrett said Okoye passed his physical Thursday but there are medical issues that need to be cleared up relating to an undisclosed health problem.

Okoye was the 10th overall pick by the Houston Texans in the 2007 draft and started 58 of 62 games in four seasons. He played 25 games for Marinelli in 2011 and 2012 with the Chicago Bears before a health issues cost him his 2013 season.

The Cowboys also signed defensive lineman Jerrod Black from Iowa State as a workout player. Black was one of the 30 national visits the Cowboys hosted during the draft process.

Also, the team released linebacker Jonathan Stewart.

Zack Martin opens at right guard
May, 16, 2014

By Todd Archer | ESPNDallas.com

IRVING, Texas -- As the Dallas Cowboys' first-round pick, all eyes were on guard Zack Martin at the first rookie minicamp practice.

And not just the coaches, scouts, front office and media.

A handful of veteran offensive linemen watched the drills Friday, led by Doug Free, Tyron Smith and Mackenzy Bernadeau.

"They just want to see us work," Martin said. "And if we’re going to be part of that group, they want to make sure and know what they’re getting."

After starting all but two of his 52 games at Notre Dame, Martin lined up at right guard on Friday. Bernadeau started 26 games the past two seasons at right guard. Ronald Leary started at left guard in 2013.

"It's really just a starting point, first time he's been out there," coach Jason Garrett said. "We see his position flex and his versatility. We actually see him starting inside more than we see him starting outside. We'll have great competition all throughout our offensive line, particularly in the interior of our offensive line. It seems like it's a pretty natural fit for him. He typically played on the left hand side, played left tackle, but his position flex is something we thought was a real asset. He's a smart football player. He has a lot of poise about him and doesn't seem to be fazed by a whole lot.”

The Cowboys threw 2013 first-round pick, Travis Frederick, into the starting lineup from the beginning last year. Martin said he does not expect it to take long to get comfortable inside.

“Playing inside, the guys are a lot tighter,” he said. “Everything is closer together, so out on the edge you’ve got room to maneuver. Inside you’ve got to have tighter footwork and be more aware.”

And if he needs any pointers, the veterans will be there.

“Just helping with techniques,” Martin said. “Technique is something you’ve got to get. They’re like another coach on the field. Doug’s been through it a bunch of years now. Maybe if he sees something the coaches don’t see, he’ll correct me.”

Anyone thinking this guy plays at a high level again is really not all that smart.

Scout’s Eye: Good Start For Street; A&M RB Has Quickness

Posted 1 hour ago

Scout’s Eye with some thoughts from first Minicamp practice:

•The one receiver that jumped out at me when watching practice was Devin Street. There is a real smoothness to his game and you can see that with his ability to run routes. He was one of those kids during the drafting process that really stood out when it came to where he was willing to take his route and the ability to finish them. Two of his better plays were routes that were run inside. One came on a slant against, Terrance Mitchell, who was in good position to make the play but Street was able to position himself in a way to snatch the ball. His other nice play, was a drag across the middle on boot action to the right. It was a solid throw by Dustin Vaughan on the move for a nice gain. Street also lined up some snaps inside as the slot as well. It was a nice start to his morning.

•A running back that showed some nice quickness and hands in the Team Run and the 7-on-7 drills was, Ben Malena out of Texas A&M. This player has some juice in the way he plays. You could see it on tape but in person, he shows it as well. He puts a lot of pressure on the linebacker to have to match his quickness in coverage but also to have to stop him before he gets going with the ball in his hands like he did in the run period. Malena has the ability to make people miss in space which is a great trait for a running back.
•Have to say that did not see the physical side of cornerback, Terrance Mitchell on tape but there were several snaps that when they went to a single high look and he had to press the receiver off the snap, he did an outstanding job of using his hands and positioning to deny the receiver space in route. There was one snap where he completely eliminated L’Damian Washington by shoving him off the field with his jam. Mitchell during the practice played on both the right and left sides.
•There is no question that quarterback Dustin Vaughan can make all the throws, but this morning, there was no question that he was a little nervous in how he handled the 7-on-7 period. There were two separate plays where he had the chance to hit a couple of easy slants and the ball just sailed on him badly. It would have been nice to see him hit those throws but he came back later in Team and hit a nice pass to Street on the boot.

•The starting lineup for the offensive line in this rookie camp was Josh Aladenoye at left tackle, Andre’ Cureton at left guard, Ronald Patrick at center, Zack Martin at right guard and Jarrod Pughsley at the right tackle.
•Along the defensive line, Ben Gardner lined up as the left end, Davon Coleman played the three technique, Ken Bishop was the one and Dartwan Bush as the right end. I thought it was an outstanding practice for the PAC 12 guys, Gardner and Coleman. Both were very quick off the ball and had some nice battles with Martin and Pughsley on the right side. There was one rep where it looked like Coleman had beaten Martin up the field, getting him to lunge but Martin was able to recover and get himself back in position on the block.
