Cowboys working out Michael Huff
November, 12, 2013

By Calvin Watkins | ESPNDallas.com

IRVING, Texas -- In need of improved play in the secondary, the Cowboys are working out free agent safety Michael Huff.

The Cowboys expressed interest in Huff in the offseason, but he signed a three-year deal with the Baltimore Ravens. But Huff was released in late October along with former Cowboys defensive end Marcus Spears.

After the Cowboys allowed a franchise-record 625 total yards to the New Orleans Saints on Sunday night, the need for veteran help at safety increased.

The Cowboys signed veteran Will Allen in the offseason but he was released Oct. 8 so the team could go with younger players.

Barry Church is one of the starting safeties, but the other, rookie J.J. Wilcox, is nursing a sprained knee and his return is uncertain. In Wilcox's place is another rookie Jeff Heath, who has struggled badly the last three games.

The Cowboys have the 32nd worst pass defense in the NFL.

This seemed like a good idea at the time.

Is he going to play for dirt?
I would think so.

I mean, his agent has to have informed him of our cap situation and he just got cut midseason, so I doubt he'd work out for the Cowboys if he was expecting significant money.

Michael Huff Among 16 Players Working Out For Cowboys

IRVING, Texas – Free agent safety Michael Huff is among 16 players scheduled to work out for the Cowboys.

The bye week is a typical time for teams to schedule workouts, particularly with the barrage of injuries that have hit the Cowboys on defense.

In addition, the Cowboys could use depth in the defensive backfield after allowing 625 total yards of offense against the Saints. The loss in New Orleans marked the second time in the last three weeks the Cowboys’ defense has surrendered at least 600 yards of total offense.

Huff, a former first-round pick in 2006 by the Raiders, played in Oakland through the 2012 season and registered 11 interceptions, including at least two in each of his final four seasons with the team. The Irving, Texas, native then signed with the Ravens in March 2013 and played in seven games before getting released last month.

In addition to Huff, the Cowboys also worked out defensive backs Jordan Pugh, Nick Saenz, George Baker, T.J. Heath and Brandon Hughes. Pugh and Hughes were both former draft picks.

The Cowboys also worked out linemen on both sides of the ball, including offensive linemen Chris DeGeare, Brandon Keith, Ryan Miller, Eric Olsen, Wayne Tribue and John Wetzel. The defensive linemen workouts included Logan Harrell, Corvey Irvin, Ogemdi Nwagbuo and Torell Troup.

Troup and Irvin were former second and third round selections, respectively, while DeGeare, Keith, Miller and Olsen were also former draft picks.

He's done.

He can't stay healthy and even when he is healthy, he can't play.

You'd be surprised.

He probably can't be worse, but I just don't think he'd add anything to this team right now.
At this point I would be willing to try anything.
