So we signed Colon...2 for 20 mil...I am comfortable with it. If we do fall out of contention early it is not untradeable. Needed a vet pitcher...wanted Arroyo, but Colon has been excellent recently.

If he pitches like he did the last few years he will be very, very good in the NL. Nice move.

The Seattle Mariners are being very aggressive in their pursuit of more hitters. They are interested in many outfielders, with one of their main targets being Nelson Cruz. While they may be interested in him, it doesn't look like he's interested in them. The Mariners offered Cruz a five-year, $75 million deal and he rejected it, according to Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times. Cruz was expected to land a decent sized contract, but not of this size. The thought of him rejecting it is mind blowing. Either he's crazy or he has a very good market willing to pay him top dollar. One team that has been very interested in Cruz is the Baltimore Orioles and it sounds like he would like to play for him. -

O'Brien also runs down the Braves needs on the heels of a quiet Winter Meetings, noting that they're optimistic about re-signing Eric O'Flaherty. Atlanta is still pursuing a veteran bench bat -- O'Brien mentions Eric Chavez -- and are still interested in Jeff Samardzija. The Braves may be considered the favorites to land Samardzija at this point, says O'Brien, noting that payroll constraints will likely preclude them from pursuing David Price.

Not sure what the Braves have left in their minor league system but I'm pretty sure the Cubs are going to ask for a lot for Samardzija. Quite possibly more than they can get at this time. That's the way they should play it, IMO. He doesn't become a free agent until 2016 so it would make sense for the Cubs to keep him unless they can sell high. Now would be a good time, though, because those two full seasons of team control left will be very appealing to potential trade partners.

I don't know if it was just a joke or not, but I read something on the dmn site that said the pick was made with the idea of bringing him in to training camp as a motivational speaker...doesn't make much sense to me

Dodgers Could Sign Young As Regular Third Baseman

The Dodgers are considering signing free agent Michael Young and installing him as the club's everyday third baseman, tweets Buster Olney of ESPN.com. MVP Sports Group represents the 37-year-old.

After spending much of his time in 2011-12 as a designated hitter, Young served last year as the Phillies' regular third bagger before finishing the year as a utilityman for the Dodgers. Young's return to a daily role in the field came with mixed results. On the one hand, he proved that he is still capable of keeping up with the grind. On the other, Young's hot corner work graded out at or below replacement level in the aggregate.

Young hit at a slightly above average rate in 2013, posting a .279/.335/.395 triple-slash in 565 plate appearances. On the other hand, UBR pegged Young as costing his clubs 4.6 runs through baserunning. And advanced fielding metrics were not fans of his work on the hot corner. UZR, for instance, graded Young as the second-worst regular third baseman in the league.

While we heard recently that the Dodgers were eyeing Young, it would seem a surprise for Los Angeles to plug him into its everyday lineup to start the year. The club could also ink him as a utility player and use his presence to regain some leverage in a seller's market. Juan Uribe, who delivered a big year for the Dodgers in 2013, remains available. But the club is reportedly prepared to move on after not hearing back on an offer to the free agent, with Olney tweeting that L.A. increasingly believes he'll find a new home. Otherwise, the Dodgers will presumably need to test the trade market, where pickings are slim and prices could be high.

Not great, but if defense was a concern they should have addressed the middle IF. Young is decent enough...Gonzalez is a GG.

So Brian Roberts to the Yanks to play second per Rosenthal? Dude is 36 and has hardly played in 4 years. If healthy could be decent though. Low risk, above average reward.

Now if they re-sign Mark Reynolds they have Johnson and him at third until/if Arod comes back. Could be better. Could be worse.

Just stop gaps for 2014. They're going to need a new full-time third baseman, SS and second baseman rather soon though.
