RIP. I actually didn't care for his style but I liked him anyway, and him and Madden had about the best chemistry among broadcasters ever. Madden and Summerall games no doubt always felt like special events.

RIP. Summerall's voice reminds me as much of the glory days in the 90s as anything.

The crew on CBS with Musburger, Cross, George, and Jimmy The Greek kind of created that whole pregame show element.

Summerall's voice created drama and really added to the game. Nobody outside of Micheals really does that anymore.

I'm not overly critical of commentators like many. I don't hold a disdain for Aikman/Buck, etc. Most of the time I don't even care who's calling the game. But Summerall was amazing.

I agree, Middie. I really don't pay much attention to who is calling the game or what they are saying. Summerall was the man though. I can't explain it but his voice calling a game stirs the emotion for me. Maybe because then I was a hopefully, proud fan who knew no better?

One guy who is underrated as an announcer is Brad Nessler. He gets some big games on ESPN college football, but he did MNF a couple times when they had a double header and he was excellent. Another great one is Vin Scully...I get all the Dodger games here, so it is cool to just sit back and listen to him...no color commentator with him, just him doing a baseball game old school.

It is pretty amazing to think that as an ex-football player he became the voice of golf and tennis for CBS too.

Most guys today stop at 2 sports, i.e. Marv Albert, Kevin Harlan, Nantz, etc.

Yeah, Lundquist is great. I don't like Danielson, who he is paired with, but he does sound like an old school football guy. Musberger is great with Herbstreit too.

Nantz does college basketball for CBS during March Madness. He's solid at it too.

One of my favorite games in recent years was the Xavier vs. Kansas St. game in the 2010 tourney with Gus doing the play by play.

It was already an execllent/exciting game but Johnson's enthusiasm took it to another level.
