Raiders rookie QB Matt McGloin to start Thursday vs. Cowboys

By Ryan Wilson | CBSSports.com

Five days ago, Raiders coach Dennis Allen named undrafted rookie quarterback Matt McGloin the starter for the Week 12 game against the Titans, despite the fact that Terrelle Pryor was healthy enough to play.

And when the Raiders face the Cowboys Thursday, McGloin will make his third consecutive start, Allen said.

“Yeah, I thought Matt played well,” Allen said, via ESPN.com. “And for him to lead us back when we needed a touchdown, he got us the touchdown we needed to give us the lead. We just couldn't hold it defensively.”

McGloin completed 19 of 32 passes for 260 yards in Oakland's 23-19 loss to Tennessee and led a fourth-quarter, 75-yard drive that ended in a 27-yard touchdown pass to Marcel Reese that gave Oakland a 19-16 lead.

The problem: The Raiders' defense couldn't get off the field, the Titans scored, and Oakland lost for the seventh time this season.

“Just couldn't get things going early on, you're going to have days like that, unfortunately that was one of those days today,” McGloin said. “But I thought we did a good job of adjusting at halftime. and it was great to see that we were able to make those changes and continue to get better and figure things out and work things out.”

Meanwhile, Pryor, who started eight games this season (42.3 completion percentage, 5 TDs, 10 INTs, 504 rushing yards), will continue to serve as McGloin's backup. For how long remains to be seen; last week, Allen was asked if McGloin could be the starter beyond the Titans game and he said, “this is a production business.”

Which we take to mean: If McGloin keeps producing, he'll keep playing.

Coming off a great, unexpected victory at New York, this is historically a game that we get embarrassed.

I'd hate to ruin Thanksgiving because we got beat by some schlub McGroin.
I think they will be tougher than most think. The only real issue for the Raiders is that they have shown an inability to get explosive plays, which has been our downfall.

McGloin was the worst QB I have ever watched at PSU, and that is saying a lot. He was terrible in college.

He will look like Tom Brady and Drew Brees against the Cowboys

And he's been at least average to decent as a pro. Go figure.

Haven't seen him play in the Pros but at PSU he threw a ton of balls 10 yrds over the receivers heads or directly at their feet.

Awful, I thought Wally Richardson was better

Maybe that's why it works for him now. 10 yards over a slow Big 10 WR is right in the bread basket for Denarius Moore running a go route.

You also have to factor in piss poor coaching at Penn State.

Plus there are no creepy old men in Oakland trying to lure him into a candy truck.

Cowboys run defense to be tested again

November, 26, 2013

By Todd Archer | ESPNDallas.com

IRVING, Texas – The Dallas Cowboys have allowed more 400-yard passers in a season than any defense in NFL history with four.

But it's not like the run defense is much better. The Cowboys gave up 202 rushing yards in Sunday's 24-21 win against the New York Giants. If not for offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride, the Giants might have had many more yards on the ground.

Luckily for the Cowboys, Gilbride wanted to throw the ball.

The Giants were the third team to eclipse 200 yards against the Cowboys, joining the Washington Redskins (216) and New Orleans Saints (242). Since Jerry Jones took over as owner and general manager in 1989, the Cowboys have allowed 200 yards in 21 games. Five came in 2000. Three came this year. Two came in 2008.

What was wrong Sunday?

"I think there were different things," coach Jason Garrett said. "We analyzed it fairly quickly but closely and there were different things that came up. It wasn't one guy. It wasn't one thing, ‘Hey we were in the C gap,' or ‘The safety didn't come down.' On different plays, on each of the longer runs they had it's one thing on this play, another thing on that play, another thing on that play. What we need to do is address those things with each of the individual guys. Sometimes it was physical. We got blocked. We weren't able to hold that B gap because that guy dug us out of that B gap, but other times it was how a corner might replace when a safety gets cracked or how a linebacker comes over the top or comes over the top too far. Some of those things came up in the game as well. We'll address those things quickly with our guys this week and hopefully we can get those things rectified by Thursday."

It needs to be because the Oakland Raiders are averaging 140.6 yards per game on the ground. Rashad Jennings leads the way with 553 yards rushing. The Cowboys might catch a break if quarterback Terrelle Pryor does not start.

"They want to run the ball," linebacker Ernie Sims said. "That's what they want to do."

The Cowboys know it, but can they stop it?

Jerry Jones: I don’t see Dallas Cowboys having a letdown game vs. Oakland Raiders
By Jon Machota

Coming off an emotional victory over a division rival, having little time to rest and playing a team that has lost three of its last four, the idea of a let down game shouldn’t be out of the question for the Dallas Cowboys.

But Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones said Tuesday morning that there’s no time for that.

“It’s such a short period of time, you don’t have time for a let up or a let down,” Jones said on 105.3 The Fan [KRLD-FM]. “You just got to go out there, obviously get that soreness out. We had a full practice yesterday, will today. You got to get that soreness out and you should have part of your assignment practiced earlier in the year, sometimes as far back as training camp because you know you’re going to have the short week and you need to get ready to know your opponent, which in this case is Oakland.

“I don’t see a let down. I just see a workman like go back, get out here, get ready to play the game, try to get physically ready to go and be ready. The next week gives you a 10-day break and that’s been, over the years has been real good for us.”
