I don't. Because I think if they followed the board it would have been Watt. But Marinelli was at it again forcing his bullshit down everyone's throats. That guy should never have a say in a draft room. He fucks shit up royally.

"I think the biggest issue,'' Jones said, "was we were playing a 4-3 there with Rod, and Rod was concerned about (Watt being able to) hold up against the run in the 4-3, and (he) didn't have that same concern with Taco.''
So as the chief personnel guy he should have pushed back on Marinelli's horseshit.

This is where I think McClay should feel empowered more. I think the structure of the Cowboys sort of fucks him on this sort of thing. I don't think he feels like he has the power to necessarily trump everyone in the room because ultimately Jerry gets to make the pick and decide whose voice he is going to listen to.

Marinelli had too much sway in the draft room and with Jerry/Stephen, they thought he was basically a DL horse-whisperer. You could partially fault McClay for that, but it is what it is.

What I will fault McClay for is not advocating for the value of Watt being used in a more creative way and helping Marinelli think outside the box. He could've easily been used similarly to Parsons in terms of toggling back and forth between lining up off the ball and off the edge.

That wouldn't compute with Marinelli. His schemes were rigid and consistent.

Id love to know how McClay viewed Watt and if he advocated for him.

Its easy to look back in hindsight, but before the draft many of the pundits viewed Watt to be a better prospect than Charlton. It wasnt like there was a huge Charlton contingent that saw him as a better player. Am I recalling correctly?

You are recalling it right.

I could be wrong but I'm almost positive the Cowboys had a higher grade on Watt but Marinelli was the driving force behind saying he wasn't a good fit for the Cowboys.

After the draft he parroted the company line about Watt not being a scheme fit on the team's radio show or whatever, did he actually believe it? Or at least did he believe that Watt wasn't enough of the better prospect to warrant the supposed lack of scheme fit?

I don't know.

But he did personally tell me that they wouldn't spend a 1st on a player who would be used like the Vikings used Anthony Barr, and ironically how we'd eventually end up using Parsons, which is basically moving them around the formation quite a bit, generally as a SLB/off-ball LB in base sets, and then edge rushing/blitzing on passing downs.

Could've just been brushing me off although my description and his answer was pretty specific.

thats fascinating seeing what happened with Parsons. Completely contradicts what he told you.

It was at the 2018 Senior Bowl, just went up and spoke for like 5-10 minutes about the team but I was most curious to get his thoughts on the Watt situation since I got the whole scheme thing but I thought there was easily a place for him if we had an open mind about it.

Tells me that what he was probably doing was towing the company line with his opinion. I also think Parsons is a much more advanced pass rusher than Barr ever dreamed of.

Quinn is also way more flexible with his fronts than Marinelli was. I have no doubt that if we were making the decision between the prospect versions of Watt/Charlton in this past draft we would've went Watt.

Yeah I wanted Watt but I thought we could stick him at RE and he would flourish.
