Jimmy Johnson makes Hall of Fame semifinalist list for first time, joining Charles Haley

Former Cowboys coach Jimmy Johnson made the semifinal list for the Pro Football Hall of Fame for the first time.

Johnson, who retired after the 1999 season, won two Super Bowls with the Cowboys. He went 89-68, including the postseason, in his nine seasons in the NFL with the Cowboys and the Dolphins.

Johnson joined one of his former players on the list of 25 modern-era semifinalists announced Wednesday night.

Defensive end Charles Haley made the semifinal list for the ninth time. He is a four-time finalist.

The selection committee reduced the ballot from 126 to 25. Linebacker Derrick Brooks, coach Tony Dungy, receiver Marvin Harrison and tackle Walter Jones were the only first-year eligible candidates to make the cut.

Guard Steve Wisniewski, drafted by the Cowboys in the second round in 1989 but traded to the Raiders the same day, joined Johnson in making the semifinal cut for the first time despite being previously eligible.

Selectors will reduce the modern-era candidates to 15 by mail ballot, with an announcement of the finalists Jan. 8. They will join the two previously announced seniors candidates, punter Ray Guy and defensive end Claude Humphrey, on the final ballot.

Terrell Davis and Jimmy Johnson are interesting cases, arguably two of the best ever over a 5ish year time span but obviously no longevity.

If you build a dynasty, you belong in the HOF.

Jimmy built a dynasty.

Wait.

How does Dungy make semis his first year of eligibility but Jimmy took 10 years to get to this point?

Jimmy has a clear better resume.

Does he? I guess cause he has one more Super Bowl but Dungy built 2 winning teams. Jimmy failed in Miami.

If by failed you mean didn't make them a Super Bowl contender, then ok, but his teams were still constant playoff participants.

Dungy got to an NFCC only once in Tampa Bay, so it's not his Bucs teams were that much better than Jimmy's Dolphins teams.

Jimmy won 2 SB's and is really responsible for 3, whereas Dungy go to and only won 1.

I'm with Geng - Jimmy's resume is more impressive.

Dungy's Bucs teams were a lot better than Jimmy's Dolphin teams. Dungy's Bucs team won a Super Bowl, too, that Jon Gruden was able to nudge over the top.

But I agree Jimmy was far more impressive. Jimmy constructed the team of the decade and IMO the deepest team on paper ever.

You could argue that Jimmy built the most talented roster/dynasty in NFL history, so there's that.

I could coach Dan Marino to the playoffs.

And that Bucs team Dungy got to the NFCC had Shaun King at QB. That's a no win situation.

Shaun King sucked, but throughout all of Dungy's tenure, that offense was a joke.
