Byrd is a good player and excellent in the clubhouse.

As an aside...Wilpon is saying the Mets may have something to announce this afternoon.

He's ok but he is 36 he is yet another player who doesn't walk enough and I doubt he can sustain his power numbers. He had a nice comeback year last year but I think he will come down to earth a bit next year. Choo is much better, 5 years younger and would have fit better in the Phils lineup.

Ellsbury is a Boras client as well and rumors say that the Cubs are "stealthily waiting in the wings", even though Epstein keeps saying they aren't going to sign any big money free agents again this season. Read that Boras is setting the benchmark for Ellsbury's deal at the 7/$142M that Carl Crawford got from Boston a few years back. Feh. Speed guy who just turned 30 and has missed significant time with injury. Very good player but really no chance to return anywhere near that kind of value.

They do need to do something fairly soon though. The prospects will start to come up mid/late next season (J. Baez) and 2015 (K. Bryant, J. Soler, maybe A. Almora) so I don't mind one more season of frugal spending in the free agent market but another > 90 loss season isn't going to sit well with a good portion of the fanbase.

The Mets are surprisingly getting quite a few nibbles on Ike...I could see him going to TB for Escobar if they don't sign Peralta.

I wasn't aware that he is a Boras client and that does make me reconsider. I do think he's probably worth 100 mil or close to it. I am a big fan. One complaint I have with him is he gets caught stealing too much but that can be fixed. I do think he's better than Byrd by a country mile though, and I think the Phillies will be disappointed with Byrd pretty quickly.

Byrd is ok and I don't think they are overpaying him by a lot (Law predicted 6 or 7 mil for 1 year I think) but I do think they are overpaying him. He isn't a bad player and he'd be a solid bat in a good lineup but the Phillies need a major bat in the worst way and if they are spending money might as well go all the way.

They don't have a lot of open positions so they don't have much other opportunity to make a major upgrade. Therefore I think they are missing an opportunity.

The bottom line is they already have a guy in Darin Ruf who has much more legit power than Byrd, walks and gets on base a lot, can hit lefties, is about ten years younger than Byrd, and makes league minimum. Stupid to sign Byrd when you have a cheaper and better alternative in house. Just another in a long line of examples that demonstrates that Amaro understands neither how to maximize a payroll budget nor the basics of the game.

This is how the third highest payroll in the game misses the playoffs two years in a row (and counting).

And is horrid against lefties....
Batting average? I wonder what his OBP is against lefties.

Edit: he is .340 career OBP against lefties which isn't that bad but with a 61 Ops+ which is yeah pretty horrid.

I take back everything I said about him. :unsure

The Phillies were one of the worst lefty hitting teams in the league so even with an ok OBP against lefties there would probably be better options than Choo for the Phillies.

:lol

Good one. Escobar is a personal favorite of Maddon. He loves his defensive range and he's cheap.

Saw a blurb on MLB Traderumors where Minnesota could be a landing spot for AJ. AJ could be going back home. :lol

You talking about Pierzinski? Doubtful. AJ has said he wants to go to a contender, which the Twins certainly are not. Maybe in a couple years when their young pitching in the minors get some seasoning, but until then, bleh.

As soon as Mauer was announced to be moving to 1st, there have been 101 different stories about who will take over the catching. I would just as soon Pierzinski die in a fire than come back to Minny. If we were a contender, I could maybe stomach him. But since we're not, I'd rather not have to look at him.

He also loves defensive 1B.
We got by playing epic busts like Sean Rodriguez at 1B at times to spell Loney last year. Defensively we'd be fine there. There is no replacement for Escobar though.

The following year you can have him as a FA since we'll have Lee coming up.

Not that interested...just saw it as a rumor. Mets talked to Os about Markakis and Rockies about Fowler.

According to Ken Rosenthal and summarized by http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/1...disqus_thread:

"The Dodgers had interest in shortstop Elvis Andrus while the Rangers had interest in Matt Kemp, though they were concerned about the $128MM owed to Kemp through 2019 and his recent injury problems. Talks between the two sides didn't go anywhere."

Exactly.
