The Skins are getting roasted all over Twitter about this.

Am I an asshole?

I understand he was a good player. And his death was a tragedy.

But retire the number of a "good" player that played a total of 4 years without team success?

Maybe I'm an asshole but it seems over the top to me.

I completely agree. He was good, sure. Very good. But I wouldn't put him in the all timer conversation at the position. If he would have been able to continue his career to the end, he may have ended up as a HOFer, maybe not. It wasn't guaranteed.

His being placed on a pedestal by their fans and the insane amount of worship heaped upon him is mainly because of the way he died. Unfortunate, but true.

We'd be the same way if something happened to Roy right before he started dating the Destiny's Child.

You're 100% right, and the fact that his jersey is one of the most popular says a lot about the organization's lack of success over the last 20-30 years.

He was a good player whose legend has surpassed what he actually was, which was a good to very good safety, but certainly nowhere near a generational or legendary type player.

But this is what always happens with young people brimming with unfulfilled potential who die young, you'll never know whether or not they would've reached what they could've been so people build that potential up into a legend.

It's not that unusual. No one has worn Jose Fernandez's number since he died in that boating accident, and like Taylor, he was years away from the HOF. The Bears retired Brian Piccolo's # too.

Taking out of circulation for a while out of respect I get. Piccolo's number honestly shouldn't really be retired.

On the flip side, Lyman Bostock's number is not retired. Nor is J.R. Richard's. Both were very good players.

I feel like if the guy had retired abruptly rather than died, would he be worthy of retiring his number? That should be the criteria.

The Yankees retired Thurmon Munson. He was very good and played over a decade. The Yankees won during his career. That makes sense to me.

A guy who was maybe 4th or 5th best in the league at his position for a few years? And the team did nothing? Eh.

No, you're spot on.

And what all these Redskins fans are conveniently forgetting is that he wasn't even good for those entire 4 years.

They were calling him a bust after his 2nd year in the league because he was on the wrong end of a number of deep balls, specifically to Crayton and Terry Glenn in 04 and then again to Glenn in 05.

It wasn't until year 3 when things began to click for him but the way they view him now, you'd think he was the greatest safety that ever played.
