I'd venture to guess it's not at all about politics. It's actually kind of dumb to suggest.
It's most likely about concern for your own personal health. There's absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to see more time and research before jumping headlong into taking medicine.
The comparison between this and measles vaccine or whatever doesn't hold water. Those vaccines have been out for decades.
Hell, I don't even like to take ibuprofen or acetaminophen if I can help it, and we know full well what that stuff does or doesn't do.
I don't blame anyone who wants to see more before jumping into the deep end of the pool.
And none of this has anything to do with whether he is a pro athlete and has an obligation to his team or whatever. Would you say a QB with a concussion should play, for the good of the team?
The backup sucks. The team needs you. Shake off your concussion and get back out there?
Of course not.
Your obligation to protect your health takes precedence.
If you believe in the vaccine and are comfortable getting it, then do that.
If you're not comfortable with it, and want to see more, then don't get it.
It's really that simple.
Great post and I agree completely.
Vaccines are a testament to the wonders of modern medicine and science and I'm a big believer in them.
But..... just as you said, we've got years and years of data and research on the existing ones. And just like the virus itself, they have a general idea of what it does to you but can't guarantee or confirm anything one way or the other because it's just too recent.
That's why I'm waiting. I'm glad my parents got it because they're older and high risk. I'm also glad my daughter got it because she's asthmatic and Covid almost put her in the hospital.
But if you're a relatively young and healthy person with no underlying conditions, I don't think there's anything wrong with waiting and seeing.
My only gripe is that if you're neither gonna get vaccinated nor have you already had covid, don't be an irresponsible jackass and go and mingle in huge crowds like everything is normal.
Don't be a prisoner at home but limit where you go and keep your distance from people.
I believe that all of the aforementioned is reasonable and everyone can find a way to compromise and work together as a society to get past this thing.
Sadly, everything becomes political these days so most people won't act reasonable nor compromise and instead they'll pick sides and fight and we as a country will be worse off because of it.
