theres the small matter of nicotine with the cigarette.
And? I'm not saying one or the other is worse or better.

All I'm saying is marijuana is not a safe alternative to cigarettes as a lot of people like to claim. (not saying that's going on here)

I believe tobacco is the health issue, not nicotine.
Is nicotine harmful to the body?

Nicotine is a dangerous and highly addictive chemical. It can cause an increase in blood pressure, heart rate, flow of blood to the heart and a narrowing of the arteries (vessels that carry blood). Nicotine may also contribute to the hardening of the arterial walls, which in turn, may lead to a heart attack.

and oh, theres this.....

Nicotine is also used in insecticides.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Im thinking it's a problem in addition to tobacco.
Speaking to the addictive nature of nicotine, Ive heard it said that its like heroin it's so addictive.
Marijuana and tobacco have very similar carcinogens. It's smoke is not a safe alternative to cigarettes.
Sorry.
And for the record, I am in total agreement that the league's stance on weed is retarded.
I'd always heard, and I remember reading something a few years back, that cigarettes were worse for you. The info was that both do damage to the lungs but I seem to remember them saying that all the tar and other carcinogenic chemicals in cigarettes were much worse than weed.
Sounds like this could be another one of those things where the experts don't agree on the effect of something. Kind of like how one group will do a study that shows that eating red meat increases vitality. Then three months later another group will do their own study which completely contradicts the first group's study.
I was speaking of tobacco essentially as a carcinogen, but point taken.
This is basically what I was referring to, when viewed through the eyes of the NFL. The mortal danger of cigarettes is well established. It's far murkier with weed.
Hailing a person's departure from weed even as it ultimately leads him to cigarettes seems awfully odd and misguided.
it's not truly 'safe'. Like many have said, smoking is inherently dangerous. Smoking weed vs smoking cigarettes is comparable as to how good or bad for the body overall (not just lung damage).
Check this out:
Tobacco has dramatic negative consequences for those who smoke it. In addition to its high addiction potential [1], tobacco is causally associated with over 400,000 deaths yearly in the United States, and has a significant negative effect on health in general [2]. More specifically, over 140,000 lung-related deaths in 2001 were attributed to tobacco smoke [3]. Comparable consequences would naturally be expected from cannabis smoking since the burning of plant material in the form of cigarettes generates a large variety of compounds that possess numerous biological activities [4].
While cannabis smoke has been implicated in respiratory dysfunction, including the conversion of respiratory cells to what appears to be a pre-cancerous state [5], it has not been causally linked with tobacco related cancers [6] such as lung, colon or rectal cancers. Recently, Hashibe et al [7] carried out an epidemiological analysis of marijuana smoking and cancer. A connection between marijuana smoking and lung or colorectal cancer was not observed. These conclusions are reinforced by the recent work of Tashkin and coworkers [8] who were unable to demonstrate a cannabis smoke and lung cancer link, despite clearly demonstrating cannabis smoke-induced cellular damage.
Furthermore, compounds found in cannabis have been shown to kill numerous cancer types including: lung cancer [9], breast and prostate [10], leukemia and lymphoma [11], glioma [12], skin cancer [13], and pheochromocytoma [14]. The effects of cannabinoids are complex and sometimes contradicting, often exhibiting biphasic responses. For example, in contrast to the tumor killing properties mentioned above, low doses of THC may stimulate the growth of lung cancer cells in vitro.
That's a bold prediction but I think Gregory will be very good. It's a little sad to me what a wasted career it has been over fucking pot. I think Gregory by now would have been an established high end pass rusher if not for his desire to smoke and the the leagues desire to prevent it.
It is definitely a two way street. It should have never been tested for to begin with, but the rules were the rules and Gregory should have abided by them if he wanted to play.
I was curious which ex-coach is predicting this. So I checked the article.
It's Phillip Tanner.
"Ex Dallas coach."
That's like, growing up your mom telling you she picked up Oreos at the store. Then you go in the cabinet and it's hydrox.
