Cowboys set a franchise-low in rushing yards

November, 3, 2013

By Calvin Watkins | ESPNDallas.com

ARLINGTON, Texas -- The Dallas Cowboys set a franchise-record with an embarrassing nine rushing attempts in the 27-23 victory against the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday. The Cowboys gained just 36 yards.

Starting running back DeMarco Murray, returning to the starting lineup after missing the previous two games with a sprained knee, had four carries for 31 yards.

"Yeah, yeah, but hey we won and we were effective in the passing game," Murray said.

The Vikings played an aggressive defense by bringing a safety closer to the line of scrimmage and Dallas wanted to attack with the passing game. With a safety closer to the line of scrimmage, quarterback Tony Romo checked out of several run plays to pass.

According to ESPN's Stats and Information, the Cowboys have dropped back to pass a NFL-high 87 percent of the time.

The Cowboys' 51 attempted passes marked the sixth time since 2006 that a team won despite dropping back at least 80 percent of the time.

"You'd certainly like to have more balance than that, obviously," coach Jason Garrett said. "We'll keep striving for that. We did run the ball a little bit fairly well early on. DeMarco looked like he was going to have a good day, but as it wore on there were some minus runs that happened that got us behind the sticks a little bit. Hard for us to get into a rhythm."

Murray had a 27-yard gain but overall the run game had three negative runs from the running backs, converted a third-and-one with a six-yard gain by Murray and minus one yard from their running backs in the second half. Romo did scramble for eight yards on a third down play.

Romo finished the game with 20 consecutive pass attempts, including plays negated by penalties.

"A few times they got us," Romo said of the Vikings. "We had called a few more runs but it was difficult with the way, their defense is predicated on that, showing you a safety down or a blitz look and then, boom, getting out. It makes it difficult if you have a couple of that stuff called."

Red Pubes is so full of shat.

If a couple of runs for minus yards in the 1st half made him completely abandon the run then I seriously question Garrett's resolve and his abilities as a coach.

He just sent a message to the other 31 teams in the league that he'll completely quit running the ball if you're able to stop them a few times early.

As a matter of fact I think teams already realize this. Notice how teams crowd the line of scrimmage against Dallas. Teams don't usually put that many men in the box unless you have a great RB and a poor QB. See the Vikings.

I think teams playing Dallas knows that if they get a few stops early Dallas will completely go away from the run.

I'm pretty sure he sent them that message a few seasons ago.

Continuity.

:lol

If by "We'll keep striving for that" he means "I'll keep paying lip service to it with no intention of actually following through because neither the QB or myself are willing to commit to that aspect of the offense no matter how many times I saw otherwise in press conferences" then I agree.

What really pisses me off is that the jackass keeps insulting our intelligence with comments like that.

Just be honest. I'd have a little more respect for him if he just came out and said that he has no intention of trying to establish a consistent running game.

Just be real.

What's amazing though is that those PA draws worked in the second half...the Witten TD in particular.

I know. That's just on the undisciplined Safety because the Cowboys sure as hell didn't set up the PA with the run game.
