Stephen Jones: We control our destiny

November, 1, 2013

By Calvin Watkins | ESPNDallas.com

IRVING, Texas -- The Dallas Cowboys hold a one-game lead for first place in the NFC East with a 4-4 mark, and it's given team executive vice president Stephen Jones hope that the team controls its destiny the last two months of the season.

"We control our destiny," Jones said after Friday's practice as his team prepares to play against the Minnesota Vikings. "We have to go out and play well and play better in all phases. I think from an injury standpoint, we do have reinforcements coming, in terms of getting players back on the field. So there are a lot of reasons to think that we can be better."

The Cowboys have lost numerous close games this season, including three by a total of four points. Jones said the team must improve it's ability to win close games, given the delicate nature of the division.

"It’s disappointing for us," Jones said. "I think we’re a better football team than 4-4. But at the end of the day, Bill Parcells used to say, ‘You are what you are.’ We’ve won four games pretty solidly. We unfortunately can’t win a close one right now. But that’s going to change. We’re going to get better. We’ll continue to improve. I do think that will change. I think we’ve got a good football team. We just haven’t been able to pull out one of these tight ones. We’ve lost four really close ones. We’re 0-4 in the close ones, and you’d like to think one or two of those would go your way. But you are what you are. We’re 4-4. We’re disappointed. But we’re certainly optimistic about what lies ahead of us."

Right now?

No, we haven't been able to win close ones for quite a few years now, dumbass.

By close ones, I'm talking about games just like the Broncos and Lions. Playing against playoff caliber teams where the end is decided by one play.

Name me the last time we beat a playoff team in a close game like that.

That bolded part is quite arbitrary. Who gets to decide which play is THE one, and which teams are playoff caliber? I only ask since in your example here, Detroit is now considered a playoff caliber team, even though they've only been to the playoffs once (2011) in the last fourteen years. And the last time they won a playoff game was 23 years ago. (against the Cowboys :lol )

I would like to think it's obvious that when someone says "We can't win the close ones" that person doesn't mean the team has literally never won a close game, but instead means that generally, and far too often, the team fails to win close games.

It's a figure of speech moreso than exact literalness.

Exactly.

And far too often, against the better teams in the league, we lose in those games.

"Control our destiny." For 95% so do the Eagles, Redskins and Giants.
