Whitlock: NFL Blame Dak's Agent — Not Jerry Jones — For Dak's Contract Predicament

Some of the most accurate analysis of Dak Prescott that I have heard. I love Dak but Whitlock is right. He MIGHT be too 10 but not Top 5. Spot on about the media as well! Shannon Sharpe went from being Dak’s worst critic to his biggest cheerleader in the offseason while Dak was negotiating a contract. I was confused as to why he turned on a dime but now it makes sense!

I think there is probably plenty of blame to go around for all involved.

I know you hate Jerry with the passion of 1,000 suns but I cannot find any fault in him in this case. What he offered was more than fair IMO.

The only thing I can fault Jerry with was not getting this done 2 years ago when it would have cost about 25 per year. The nonsense from this year was totally a France issue. The Cowboys offer was more than fair given the performance of Dak. They offered to pay him as though he was their choice to lead them in the future and pay him the same as a much better QB. This year is totally on France and Dak.

This is 100% correct and why I said there is plenty of blame to go around.

Two years ago we weren't sure that Dak deserved to be the long term QB.

The interesting tidbit here is, the media is beholden to the agents because the agents are the one who leaks them information most reliably and consistently.

So that kinda should be G,S,M when it comes to these media narratives.

I can't watch 25 minutes of Whitlock. :nodno

But I do agree that both sides are to blame. Jerry for not getting this done the year before, and Dak and his agent for not conceding enough on their end. I like Dak and want the Cowboys to resign him. Despite his flaws he's still one of the top 6 or 7 QBs in football. But I also can't ignore what we saw in 2017 and 2018 before the Amari Cooper trade.

When you pay QBs north of $30 million per year it's with the expectation that they'll be able to do more with less since there's going to be less money available to surround them with talent. Dak hasn't shown that he's able to do that yet. That's why I thought he and his agent should've been more flexible.

That's true. People are complaining about Crawford's and Jaylon's contracts, and those guys were signed early to try and take advantage of early discounts.

Imagine if Dak was still performing at substandard levels as he was in 2017 to half of 2018, but we were stuck with him for a couple more years at $25 million per year.

It's a risk either way.

After the 2018 season I think we had a pretty good idea of his ability. He was a borderline top 10 QB whose arrow was still trending up.

Jerry's offer still made Dak one of the highest paid QBs in football.

I am not sure I blame Jerry at all. Jerry's offer is already more than I personally think Dak is worth - given the zero sum game of salary cap salary management.

But two years ago would have been in the middle of our early season slump when Prescott did not look good (albeit with a rookie Gallup and no Amari Cooper).

I didn't say he should have been signed two years ago.

After the 2018 season would be the Spring/Summer of 2019. That's when I thought the Cowboys should have found a way to get a deal done.

By the end of 2018 we'd had in the previous 2 years, half a season of very good QB play, and 1 1/2 seasons of not good enough. I don't have any problem with them letting it play out a little more.

You're much better off with a great QB at 40 million than a shitty QB at 25 million.

Did we ever confirm how much we offered him and for how many years?
