Gruden says he’d like to give coaching “one more try”

In Saturday’s one-liners, we pointed out that former Buccaneers coach Jon Gruden referred to one of the Glazers (we’re not sure which one — possibly Jay) as a “son of a bitch” during an Ocala speaking engagement.
Lurking on the second page of the story (as spotted by the folks at JoeBucsFan.com) was a more interesting comment.
“I would like to give coaching one more try,” Gruden said.
Gruden has made similar remarks in the past, but it’s becoming likely that he’ll ditch the ESPN broadcast booth for the sidelines sooner rather than later, especially since this is his fifth season out of the game. With so many of his former assistants already under contract with the Cowboys, speculation has persisted that Gruden could replace Jason Garrett in Dallas.
Regardless of the destination, Gruden’s leverage could peak after the coming season, given the success of his former colleague in Green Bay, Chiefs coach Andy Reid. Reid has thrived a season after being booted by the Eagles, and the turnaround in Kansas City will make all members of the Fired Football Coaches Association more attractive, including the founder of the group.
As the 2013 season continues to unfold, the question becomes whether Gruden will reiterate his commitment to ESPN (possibly via another contract extension that likely allows him to leave for coaching at any time) or whether he’ll make it clear that his FFCA hat is back in the ring.
Either way, it could make for some awkward production meetings in November and December with coaches he’ll potentially be replacing or competing with in 2014.
