There isn't much to spend at DT, Irving is probably the best guy on the street and I would not give him a ton. But there could be at other spots.
Too bad that nobody can get him to care about football.

Well now that he can apparently smoke up without repercussion maybe he's more interested.

Obviously he has a #1 priority but maybe if football is his second priority it is now more compatible with his first.

I just hope the Cowboys front office (mainly Jerry) isn't dumb enough to do something crazy like trading away 2nd - 4th round draft picks in an all-in attempt to replace McCoy. Especially with so many COVID-related unknowns surrounding this season.

I fully expect them to go on with the guys they've got. From a roster standpoint, you essentially have to.

If they're intent on keeping Crawford, and all indications suggest that they are, he's strictly a defensive tackle now. You're not taking Aldon Smith, Lawrence, or Griffen off the field for him anyway. And with McCoy gone, you need some veteran presence at 3T. And unless they're cutting Hill or Woods, that's three, and they're certainly keeping Poe and Gallimore, so that looks like 5 to me. One more than they likely wanted to anyway, but that's what I'm seeing as of today.

If it's for a long term piece I wouldn't mind, especially since we should be getting at least a 3rd and 4th in comp picks next year. If it's a 31 year old 2-year stopgap then obviously that's a no.

Told you this was probably just a matter of time, guys don't normally pop muscles and go out for the year on that type of innocuous stuff. The quad was clearly a ticking time bomb.

With that said, I'd imagine this is mostly cap manipulation with the intent to resign him next year.
you called it, man. it was even stipulated in the contract. So, yeah, it was imminent.

I'm not counting on it.

Even his 'attempt' at reinstatement looks to be nothing more than a flippant remark on social media.

Randy Gregory can't seem to get reinstated, but at least he looks to be trying.

Irving just doesn't care, and nobody can care for him.

Hill was at least a two round reach. He couldn't stay on the field for disciplinary reasons.

Cowboys had a desperate need they for whatever reason felt they could only fill via the draft and locked onto a Marinelli body type for the position.

That "contract" with Marinelli just pisses me off every time I think about Hill. If he does anything but get cut without fanfare I will be surprised. Doesn't have the head for the game on a couple of different levels.

That Dallas drafted Gallimore is more telling than anything else.

Pretty much everything I read about him had him a a solid 3rd rounder. Some even said he could sneak into bottom of 2nd.
That was largely based on talent alone and those (apparently including Dallas) who had chalked off both his lack of motor as "coachable" and his off field concerns as "isolated incidents".

I wouldn't have been surprised if some teams had taken him off their draft board or at least out of the first four rounds.

The Cowboys claim they "did their homework", but mainly they gambled on a part to fit into their machine that met body type and playing style.

And quite often players that are "highly ranked" often slide, so when people say 3rd, it often translates to 3-4.

Madubuike was supposedly a solid 2nd rounder, but he ended up being a steal in the early 3rd, and he has no outright concerns like motor or being unable to get along with his coach.

Hill isn't anywhere close to Madubuike as a prospect by comparison. Dallas just had to have him, and burned premium draft capital to do so.

Oh. So instead of taking what actual NFL people have said, we should go with your assumptions?

Ok. Sounds good.

And I really liked your often translates. Very hard to deny it's credibility. I'm sold. You've convinced me.

Draft publications and websites aren’t written by NFL scouts and personnel guys, so what NFL guys are you referring to? Marinelli? Really?

The real NFL people actually say little or nothing about prospects.

Many publications didn’t even have Hill in the top four rounds until he suddenly rode a wave of hype and team visits right before the draft.

And it always turns out great when prospects suddenly climb boards late like that.

I saw one draft site still with him ranked as a 6th rounder. Walter Football, a solid site that doesn’t change its tune based on sudden hype, had him rounds 4-6.

None have him going in the fucking 2nd, unless it was the articles that speculated he’d go to idiotic Dallas. That’s how badly we telegraphed our interest.

And now the best thing his new coach has to say about him is how well he “asks questions”.

I’m not feeling great about this guy, NoDak, and it was silly for any team foolish enough to have looked past the motivation problems and benchinga to have ranked him in the 3rd round.

Not sure where you got your info, but no one but the Cowboys ever leak their draft boards

McClay argued for him as a 2nd rounder although I think for the most part he played the game and went along with the Marinelli love for self-preservation reasons. With that said, I highly doubt McClay and the scouts had the guy ranked as a 5th rounder and just let Marinelli pump him up by 3 rounds on a whim, I'd imagine they had him more as a 3rd, maybe early 4th, and then Marinelli bumped him up a round or so.

Daniel Jeremiah also had him in his top 100, top 70 even I think, and he was supposedly offered a job by the Jets based on his ties with Joe Douglas. Gil Brandt had him ranked in his top 100 I think also.

To be fair, half of these scouts aren't worth shit anyway, and Brandt is almost certainly over the hill, but I think it's unrealistic to argue that nobody had Hill even in the 3rd aside from old man Marinelli.

And Kiper also had him as a 4th rounder, which is what I called it— two round reach. One site mocked him in the 7th! The predictions were all over the place, but no one had him as a 2nd rounder.

All Marinelli saw in Hill was his raw talent playing at his best. You obviously can’t project that level of play over his whole career. Not with his maturity and laziness issues.

McClay and everyone else in the Dallas front office will defend their pick made as part of a collective decision. Like you said, the personnel guys are always left covering for the decisions made by the execs.

I remember the scouts backtracking after the 2009 draft, claiming there were a range of players who could go anywhere from rounds 3-5 when justifying how they drafted late round talent in the third round because they could play special teams.

"Pre-existing condition". They clearly knew and they took a chance anyway. Rolled snake-eyes.
At 30+ years old, most guys are a chance in this league. It was a great move at the time, and considering the club was able to walk away when they did turns an unfortunate reality into a shrewd circumstance.

Now if Hill ever gets his act together... holy shit!
Go watch his interview today on the team's site, I wouldn't hold my breath.

You never know, but the guy seems legitimately fucked in the head, which of course is the main reason Charlton went to shit as well.

And how did Marinelli tell himself "THIS is my guy"?

Senile.

It was a damn good move at the time. Especially, as you stated, considering they built the contract with an escape clause.
