Bryant makes his voice heard
BY TOM ORSBORN : Sunday, October 20, 2013

PHILADELPHIA – Dez Bryant couldn’t hold his tongue.

Cowboys coach Jason Garrett wants his players to display poise on the field, but Bryant was unhappy with all the abuse he believed the Eagles defensive backs dished out in Sunday’s battle for first place in the NFC East.

So he lobbied the officials each time he thought they held him, jostled him or did anything else to keep the ball out if his hands.

“I don’t want to be a pain for the refs, but damn, some things are just obvious,” Bryant said after Dallas’ 17-3 win.

Eventually, his pestering paid off.

On third-and-goal from the 4-yard line in the third quarter, Tony Romo targeted Bryant on a slant route. This time, the Eagles’ Bradley Fletcher got flagged for interference, giving Dallas first-and-goal at the 1.

“Thank you,” Bryant told the official.

On the next play, Phillip Tanner scored on a 1-yard run to give Dallas a 10-0 lead.
The penalty made up for all the other times Bryant pleaded with the officials to no avail.

“I don’t want to get in their ear, but if it’s obvious, it’s obvious,” he said. “The guy was just looking at me like I wasn’t even there. I’m like, ‘I know you see me talking to you, man. He’s holding me.’ ”

After one incompletion, both Bryant and Romo complained to an official, who appeared ready to throw a flag but apparently decided against it.

“He put the flag back into his pocket,” Bryant said. “I’m like, ‘What? I don’t care if you’re having trouble getting the flag out, throw it.’ But that’s just how this game went.”

Bryant recorded eight catches for 110 yards. It was the third 100-yard game of the season.
In the fourth quarter, he had catches of 16 and 10 yards during the 10-play, 72-yard drive that ended with Romo hitting rookie Terrance Williams on a 9-yard slant to give Dallas the lead by the final score.

I hate to sound like a conspracy theorist, but the refs have not been very friendly against us in the games I've watched. They miss holding calls on Dez and they miss blantant holds against Ware as well. On the flip side, we seem to get more than our fair share of flags. All thos unnecessary roughness penalties against RGIII come to mind.

It was annoying watching us get flagged for the most innocuous holding and then watch Dez get mugged and get nothing.

I didn't get to see yesterday's game but I've seen it in other games where DBs a grabbing and pulling at Dez without getting flagged. Perhaps Dez should start pushing off and see if he gets called?

He's already been called for that once.

As mentioned above, it isn't just Dez, the lack of holds against the D line has been appalling. Red J is the "walk around" coach now and that's the sort of thing he needs to be all over. Anyone here think Jimmy would stand silent?

Red is complaining but we've already seen what happens when you (marinelli) take that too far.

Garrett talks about Bryant getting mugged

October, 21, 2013

By Calvin Watkins | ESPNDallas.com

IRVING, Texas -- Cowboys coach Jason Garrett was playing with words on Monday in a chat with reporters regarding wide receiver Dez Bryant.

During Sunday's victory over the Eagles, Bryant complained to the officials about the defensive backs holding him. Bryant raised his hands after one non-call about getting mugged by the Eagles Cary Williams. During another pass play, Williams laid on top of Bryant which prompted quarterback Tony Romo to throw a ball in that direction, drawing a flag.

However, the potential penalty against Williams was negated by a penalty against guardRonald Leary.

But Bryant did draw a pass interference penalty prompting him to say 'thank you, thank you' to the officials.

A reporter asked Garrett if Bryant is getting mugged more during pass routes?

"When you say mug what does that mean?," Garrett said.

Grabbing and holding him, Garrett was told. "He's been dealing with that since he was in fourth-grade in Lufkin, Texas," Garrett said.

Garrett was then asked is it OK for Bryant to lobby for calls with the refs.

"When you say lobbying what does that mean?," Garrett said.

Talking to the refs and pointing things out.

"Yeah, this is a guy who gets a lot of attention," Garrett said. "Again, has gotten a lot of attention. Again, has gotten a lot of attention for a long, long time in his life. He has to get used to that and he has to understand how to play through that, whether it's a coverage that rolls to him or whether it's guys being physical with him during the play. Of if they're talking stuff to him after the play, you have to get to a point where that stuff doesn't bother you and just go play and keep playing and, 'Let my performance speak for itself.'

So he has to understand that and he's been dealing with it for a long, long time. Sometimes we all try to make the officials aware of something that might be happening in the ballgame to hopefully give us an advantage. Typically we're honest about it and he's certainly honest about it and if he feels like he's getting grabbed or tugged down the field, we have to let those guys know. You don't want to make that the focus of your day. You want to release, run my routes, catch the ball, get back to the huddle. Keep doing that over and over again."

“I don’t want to be a pain for the refs, but damn, some things are just obvious,” Bryant said. “I think if that ref didn’t ... You know what? I’m just happy he called it.
