Lee leads dominant defensive outing

October, 20, 2013

By Tim MacMahon | ESPNDallas.com

PHILADELPHIA – Chip Kelly joked this week that he never saw Sean Lee wreaking havoc while he was studying the USC defenses the last few years.

It was Kelly’s way of downplaying the relevance of his success against Cowboys defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin at the college level, pointing out that personnel mattered much more than scheme. It was a much more prescient comment than the Eagles coach would have preferred.

Lee, the Cowboys’ middle linebacker, headlined a dominant defensive effort in Dallas’ 17-3 win Sunday afternoon.

“I’m glad he’s on our side and we’re counting on him,” owner/general manager Jerry Jones said. “You could argue there’s nobody that’s more important to the success of our team than Sean Lee.”

Lee provided plenty of ammunition for that argument against the Eagles. He was credited with 11 tackles, one tackle for a loss, an interception and a pass deflection as the Philadelphia offense sputtered all day.

That’s the kind of outing that makes an owner smile after the six-year, $42 million contract extension he gave Lee just before the season started.

LeSean McCoy’s statistical line might be the best indicator of Lee’s impact on the game. McCoy, the NFL’s leading rusher, was held to only 55 yards on 18 carries. The most impressive play Lee made was when he ran down McCoy a few yards behind the line of scrimmage on a sweep, when it appeared that McCoy was going to turn the corner and rip off a big gain.

“I remember the last time I came up here and played two years ago, he ran for 180,” Lee said, acknowledging that he took the challenge of containing McCoy personally. “He ran all over us, so I knew coming in, this guy’s an unbelievable player and an extreme challenge. All week we were working on finding a way to stop him, finding a way to stop him. I think we did a pretty good job today doing it.”

McCoy has been the best running back in the league this season, but Lee was the best player at Lincoln Financial Field on Sunday.

The entire front 7 did a magnificent job containing McCoy. Everyone was disciplined and maintained gap integrity. They took away the cutback lanes which is where McCoy does most of his damage.

It was an A+ performance for the run defense.

No doubt. I was stunned at how well they were able to keep McCoy in check in both the run game and the pass game. Well done.

Michael Irvin called that out in the NFLN pregame coverage.

He kept talking about how Marinelli was staying on their asses about that.

It is impressive how he's got these guys performing when you look at it.

It is easy to bitch when they don't get the job done, but seeing what he is doing, it makes you marvel and how bad the DL coaching we have had for the past ten years has been. We have had talent and resources spent there.

The tackling was outstanding too as was the safety support, especially from Church.

There were numerous times where he wasn't even on the screen then shot in and took him down.

The tackling was very good.

So were the Eagle guys falling down like the equipment guy gave them tap shoes instead of cleats.

Must be great for Kiffin after people wouldn't shut up all offseason about how he couldn't figure out how to stop Chip Kelly's offense.

The defensive effort was good. Still, it would have been different if their QB could hit the broad side of a barn and if thei receivers could catch. Their effort was very poor. Ther might have been a few more running lanes if they would have competed passes.

Yeah, he got 1/2 a sack in his first game. Can't complain about that.

My only complaint with the DL is, why isn't Vega cut yet? That moron extended the same drive twice with his penalties.

And wiped out a pick that would've certainly resulted in our 3rd TD of the day.

Healthy Sean Lee producing all over field

October, 21, 2013

By Todd Archer | ESPNDallas.com

IRVING, Texas -- Dallas Cowboys linebacker Sean Lee started his seventh straight game Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Why is that significant?

He started only six last year before his season ended because of toe surgery.

Lee was credited with 11 tackles in Sunday’s 17-3 win against the Philadelphia Eagles, giving him double figures in five straight games and 88 for the season. Lee also added a tackle for loss, a pass deflection and a fourth-quarter interception of Matt Barkley.

Lee and cornerback Brandon Carr are tied for the team lead in interceptions with two apiece.

He played a big part of why LeSean McCoy was held to only 55 yards rushing.

But was it Lee’s best game?

“He plays a lot of good games,” coach Jason Garrett said. “He certainly was very productive defending the run. He had the interception. But he’s played a lot of really good football games. A few weeks ago, I think in a loss, I don’t know how many tackles he had, 18 or whatever he did, so he’s a pretty darn good football player and he seems to play that way week in and week out.”

Since entering league in 2010, Dallas Cowboys vet Sean Lee leads NFL in interceptions by linebackers

IRVING — The first turnover Philadelphia committed on Sunday was forced by Sean Lee. The Cowboys linebacker snagged Matt Barkley’s pass early in the fourth quarter of a 17-3 victory.

“It was one of those deals where you’re reading the quarterback and the throw and you get in position and he put it right on me,” Lee said. “It was one of those deals where I was lucky to get to it.”

It’d be one thing to say it was good fortune if the play made by Lee was rare. But it wasn’t. He now has nine career interceptions, more than any other NFL linebacker has collected since Lee entered the league in 2010.

The takeaway by Lee was the highlight of a sterling performance in which he led the team with 11 tackles and helped corral Eagles running back LeSean McCoy, who was held to 55 yards on 18 carries.

“He’s a pretty darn good football player,” head coach Jason Garrett said, “and he seems to play that way week in and week out.”

Church is in session indeed.

There were numerous times where he wasn't even on the screen then shot in and took him down.
We haven't seen the likes of that since Woodson.

The remarkable thing about his tackles is that he drove through the ball carrier seemingly full speed not breaking down prior to contact. This technique indicates confidence and a mind set that "you're gonna be punished."

I like it a lot.

Church is insane. I love when I'm like "well shit guess they're getting a FD..." all of a sudden Barry Effing Church is flying on a LINE to the ball carrier and dropping him in his tracks. Hey Wilcox this is how you tackle.

Yo Alex be sure to let everyone know how right I was about him.
