Question: what happens come regular flu and common cold season arrives. Are we gonna have ppl panicking, overwhelming hospitals and blowing up Twitter Instagram with chicken little death declarations? Is my work gonna require 14 day quarantine because I caught the common cold?
I do wonder if we didn't have wide spread free testing would we still be freaking out? We know the flu, we understand the flu and we don't worry much about it. Covid is unknown at this point and it has created a lot of panic as result.

Yep the sides just chose the expert that says what they want to hear. Birx has a more positive outlook on the outbreak so of course Democrats think she is trash. Fauci has a far more negative outlook so they love him. I don't think either is particularly political but they have both fallen on sides of the fence regardless.
The exact minute Fauci said something they disagreed with, they would cancel him, too.

Yep, which is why he played stupid when it came to protests and the spread of the disease. The guy isn't dumb.

I just watched the exchange between Fauci and Rand Paul and it's very clear that Fauci is extremely diplomatic.

Has anyone noticed the subtle tone today is changing on coronavirus?

Off the top of my head I read 3 strangely positive-ish takes.

1. Fauci says k-12 and colleges can reopen if done safely.

2. WSJ says “good news, doctors are getting better at treating covid-19.”

3. Some random news blurb on my iPhone claimed that reported numbers fell far below the average. I wish I would have caught what it was before the feed refreshed.

Weird.

Saw something today that explained that California surge is dying out.

But they cautioned that reopening wouldn’t be happening any time soon.

To put everything in perspective about the mortality danger of Covid19 just start with the total population worst case scenario. The population of the US is rounded at 333,000,000.

Current mortality stats is about 1 %. In this case is everyone in the US contracted the virus the mortality number would be 3,300,000. That’s the absolute max figure.

If 25% of the population were infected that would be 83,250,000 infected cases and 1 percent of that would be 832,500 deaths.

You can already see that some of the projections of deaths by some experts is preposterous but at a minimum is outright panic projections to keep the masses confused or paranoid.

To my knowledge there isn’t a real handle of infected totals but just judging even the worst in infected areas in the country I don’t think there is even 10% of the total population that is infected and the majority of the country is a very low percentage of the population and certainly less than 10%.

I’m not buying the numbers some are projecting but to have any credibility you would need this framework to work any projection of mortality rates in the pandemic.

Doesn’t surprise me.

I’ve been asking nurses I come in contact with if the death numbers are daily or accumulated and reported clumped together. Even they don’t know.

And weird, most of the people who work in hospitals and care facilities that I know of, they don’t wear masks when they come to my place.

I would think they’re the ones who would be big time into it.

On another note, my wife was reading me some shit on how teachers and teacher unions were throwing the biggest fit over going back to school.

Our place is literally a stones throw from a high school and middle school. Most of our morning traffic is usually school teachers getting a coffee or espresso beverage and avocado toast(hipsters) before school.

Recently they’ve been popping in for lunch because they’re all getting their shit together for distance learning I guess.

When my wife was reading that shot to me the other night, I stopped her and asked “did any of those motherfuckers wear masks in to get their food or coffee?”, all but one or two didn’t wear a mask.

It’s hypocritical. They want extended vacations from having to put up with 30 shitty kids, I don’t blame them, but that’s what they get paid for.

90% of customers wear masks now, where hardly anyone ever did up until 3ish weeks ago.

Most ask when they come in if they have to, we don’t enforce it, and they’re thankful.

Point one, I've dealt with docs a few times since this began, and they've seemed very unconcerned (less than me, anyway) about all of this. That always surprises me.

And a buddy of mine who thinks this is all a bunch of crap feels that way because two docs he knows well think yes, the virus is real, but the panic and paranoia and shutdowns about it are totally undeserved.

Point two, I'm not anti-mask and was promoting them before they even became mandatory here. But the research since then shows that this virus is very rarely spread from casual contact. The virus doesn't explode because someone walks by you without a mask at Target. It explodes when groups of families or friends get together, or people sit together inside a nasty subway car, and breathe the same air for extended periods of time.

So even though I don't hate the masks like some, I also think this business of judging someone's entire character by how often they wear a mask has become totally ridiculous.
