Tanner says he took his man into throwing lane, causing interception by Romo

Phillip Tanner says it was his mistake that led to the second-half interception by Tony Romo in Sunday’s game against the Eagles.

There didn’t appear to be much doubt about that, as the television broadcast showed Romo chastising the little-used third-year running back.

“I brought my man inside,” Tanner said. “I should have broke outside. But that’s something I should have known. As the leader that Romo is, he did what he was supposed to do. He came over and got me right.”

Romo said the throw was intended for Cole Beasley, who was open, and that Tanner had got an unusual coverage by the defender, linebacker DeMeco Ryans.

“The kid makes a heck of a play,” Romo said of Ryans. “I got to be able to somehow feel him and see him and not make that mistake.”

Tanner still blamed himself.

“That’s something I should know,” he said. “But we got the win. Overall, that’s the most important thing. So I just got to build from that and not make that mistake again.”

Tanner had two carries, both in short yardage. He was stopped on a third-and-1 but scored on a 1-yard run.

I thought that was the case. Tanner shouldn't have lured his defender across the middle, and that is why Romo was bitching at him.

Romo looked right at him though. I don't know about this one. You just can't throw that pass.

Right.

I don't know how he doesn't see Ryans since he's already in the passing lane.

Plus Romo gave a real pussy attempt at a tackle. Fucking level somebody if you make such a bad throw. Damn.

I've never seen so much damage control geared around a player. I suppose it's in response to disproportionate levels of criticism.
But Christ, it's a bad throw, there doesn't need to be a cadre of fall men to take the blame, just so Romo appears flawless. Even if it were true (which it's not) it wouldn't alieve the criticism.

If he was going to Beasley, it was a terrible throw.

Wrong route led to Tony Romo pick

October, 21, 2013

By Calvin Watkins | ESPNDallas.com

PHILADELPHIA -- The second interception thrown by Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo in Sunday's victory over the Philadlephia Eagles was a result of a wrong route by running back Phillip Tanner, who got in the way of a pass intended for receiver Cole Beasley.

Linebacker DeMeco Ryans picked off the third-quarter pass and returned it 36-yards.

"Cole Beasley has his guy beat pretty good on the play and the ball is thrown to Beasley," Romo said. "Our back actually kind of end up going to the wrong spot even with it, the kid makes a good play on it, getting back into the play and then I got to be able to see him and not make that mistake."

On the return, Romo tried to strip Ryans near the sidelines, but right tackle Doug Freeended up making the tackle.

"I was trying to get the ball," Romo said. "I thought that was my best chance."

After the play, Romo yelled at Tanner for running the wrong route.

"That's what a leader of a team is supposed to do," Tanner said of getting chastised by Romo. "I respect him doing that as a leader."

Beasley ran a crossing route but Tanner was supposed to run his route in the opposite direction. When Romo threw the pass, Ryans moved to his right and snagged it. The Eagles converted the turnover into a field goal, cutting the Cowboys lead to 10-3.

The turnover wasn't a momentum changer for the Cowboys as Romo would lead the Cowboys on a 10-play, 72-yard scoring drive to push the lead to 17-3.

"That's a big play in the ballgame for the defense to get a stop and a sudden change there and not allow them to kick a field goal," coach Jason Garrett said. "That's really important and a significant part of the ballgame and then we responded back on offense to extend the lead one more time."

Maybe it was a bad pass but Tanned ran the wrong route. 2 screwup equals an interception.

Right.

Romo needs to get better at looking left, right, and left again before crossing the street.

In fairness, he doesn't have the benefit of a freeze frame photo. In his mind Tanner is supposed to clear to the left. By the time Romo releases the football Tanner is cutting across the field and Ryans is tracking the ball.

But I agree that two screw-ups equals an interception.

Brilliant idea.

In that it's an idiotic idea.
Feel free to elaborate on that. Tackling is really idiotic, especially when Romo was in prime position to atone for an egregious and idiotic mistake
which could have cost the game. This should be interesting.

I'd rather give up a pick six than lose our QB for the year. Ever watched Peyton Manning fumble a ball and then make absolutely no attempt to get in the pile and recover it? Yeah. Having your QB who doesn't train for it to hit a LB is moronic. At best he should try to get in the way and then very quickly get out of the way if anyone actually gets near him.

This is football dude, not chess. When you've played the game all your life, you don't have to train on how to tackle a ball carrier.

Just let him go for the pick six, right? And let the Iggs right back in the game. As it was, that gave them their only points.

And how the hell you compare a tackle to a scramble/scrum for a fumble I don't get at all. They're not comparable at all.

That is what I call moronic.

I'm not sure Tony has ever thrown a legitimate interception in his life. It seems he's always sabotaged by his receivers.

Right they're not at all comparable except for all the contact.

The rest of your shit is just pure idiocy. Watch QBs and kickers attempt tackles sometime. There's a reason they look like idiots and frequently get hurt. I guess no QBs should slide either, after all this is football not chess. Get real.
